Rugby League

The St Augustine’s Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge teams have kickstarted their debut campaigns in supreme fashion. The teams travelled to Mareeba in Round 1 to take on Mareeba State High School. The Cowboys Challenge team began the day in clinical fashion, scoring a 28-8 victory with Lucas Russell, Fyn Harrison, Nazaiah Manuel, Xavier Lallemand and Leo Pezzelato all crossing for tries. Xavier Lallemand was a constant threat in attack, earning player of the match honours. This set the scene for the First XIII in their fixture that followed. After a slow start, tries to Patrick Jones and Cooper Meares, and Jones’ perfect form off the boot, made it 18-0 before Mareeba struck back with a try on the wing. But that would be the only time Mareeba troubled the scorers as Saints’ defence held strong. Noah Dowdle, Abu-John Mye and Lucas Lane all scored for Saints in the 36-4 triumph.

The teams then travelled to Townsville to take on Holy Spirit College. The Cowboys Challenge team got into an arm wrestle with Tristian Martin opening the scoring, diving over from dummy half. Holy Spirit College then hit back to make the score 6-4. Fyn Harrison then scored after scoring off a well-executed short ball from Lucas Russell. Tristian Martin then scored his second try with Holy Spirit scoring a consolation try to lock in the final 18-8. Connor Jensen earnt man of the match honours for his hard work and tenacity in the middle third of the field. Jesse Ziegler scored the opening try with an outstanding individual effort before, Jack Rix (2), Patrick Jones, and Abu-John Mye all scored tries in a dominant 30-4 win. Both teams are sitting on top of their pools ahead of their vital clash with Mackay State High School next week in Townsville. Thanks Mr O’Farrell, Mr Tomarchio, Mr Anderson and Mr Will for your dedication to the Rugby League program.

Recently, our U16 and First XIII Rugby League teams faced Trinity Bay in the Cowboys Challenge and Aaron Payne Cup trials. Despite a loss for the U16 team, they showed promising signs that they can build upon in the weeks ahead leading into the season. On the other hand, the First XIII side dominated the game, showcasing the results of their training and hard work. Both teams are building towards their Round 1 fixture against Mareeba State High School in Week 7. Thank you, Mr O’Farrell, Mr Tomarchio, Mr Anderson and Mr Will, for devoting countless hours to prepare the teams thus far this season.

Thank you Cairns Post for these amazing photos.

Peninsula Tennis Championships

St Augustine’s entered a senior team into the Queensland Secondary School Tennis Competition. Saints secured a dominant win against St Mary’s Catholic College to start the game winning 6-0. We then came up against the highly fancied Trinity Bay State High School. Saints got off to a fast start before Trinity Bay fought back to tie at 3-3 with Saints narrowly achieving a victory 24-23 games. Well done to Gabriel Weeks, Aidan Theron, Finn Weeks and Nicholas Jensen on being crowned the Peninsula champions. Thanks Mr Jay Killoran for coaching the squad.

Bill Turner Football

The Bill Turner football squad have continued their run of success with solid wins against Newman College (13-0) and Good Counsel College (8-0). The squad is building strong combinations in attack and defence. Tommy Ruggiero, Dominic Johnson and Jack Edwards have had several classy touches and finishes. Our goalkeeper, Patrick Maher, has retained a clean sheet throughout the competition. The squad has made it to the regional final on Thursday 15 June, against Cairns State High School at 4:30pm at Cairns High.

Senior AFLQ Cup

The senior AFLQ Cup team began the opening round of the AFLQ Cup competition with a dominant clean sweep. The team continued their strong form that they have shown throughout the CISSA competition to set up a match against Gordonvale State High School in Week 10. The team will be looking to secure a victory to progress to the next round of the competition.

T20 Cricket

Seniors

By Mr Heath McKenzie

The 2023 T20 School Cricket season commenced last week with Round 1 games played at Walker Road Sporting Complex, Edmonton.

St Augustine’s entered three teams in this year’s tournament: two junior teams and one senior team. All teams won their games, with the exception of the match between the two junior teams.

The First XI Senior team played St Andrew’s and Bentley Park College in their matches. In the first game against St Andrew’s, the First XI batted first, and set a total of 149 runs. Henry King was the stand-out with bat, scoring 92. St Augustine’s managed to keep St Andrew’s to 50 runs in their innings. There was some accurate bowling from a number of our team, with bowling figures on 1 wicket for 3 runs from Seth McGinty, 1 wicket for runs 4 from Myles Howard, and 1 wicket for 5 runs from Jaden Bakurski.

In their second match, the First XI batted first, setting a total of 115 runs. Valuable contributions were made by Myles Howard, Jared Caltabiano, and Seth McGinty, all scoring 25 runs each. When bowling, the team kept Bentley Park to just 87 runs with some classy bowling from Seth McGinty, 2 wickets for 2 runs, and Ruben De Lange, 2 wickets for 19 runs.

The senior team now progress to the next round, playing the winning schools from the Cassowary Coast and Tablelands districts.

Juniors

By Mr Max Churchward

The Junior A team had 3 big wins scoring an average of 120 runs in each of their three T15 games. The big scorers were Thomas King who in 2 innings scored 77 n.o. and 50 and Ian De Lange with 34 n.o. Bowling honours were shared equally amongst the bowlers. Notable performances were Ashton Salerno who got figures of 2/0 against St Andrews and Jack-Levi Hume with 2/5 against St Augustine's B team.

The young B team scored 2 wins from their 3 fixtures, only losing to the Saints A team. In the B team Harrison Bennett scored a rapid 77 not out in a great opening stand with Ryan Scarborough (25) to start the day against St Andrew’s. The team then bowled and fielded extremely well to restrict St Andrew’s scoring to 51 and secure a strong win. They finished the day with a fixture against Newman College. The boys demonstrated great sportsmanship in this game as they secured a dominant win with some lusty hitting from James McDonough and Zack Caltabiano the highlight. The boys again put in a gritty fielding display to limit scoring opportunities for the opposition batting.

The A team now moves into the next round playing teams from the Atherton Tablelands on 26 July.

Congratulations to all the athletes who represented Saints in these competitions. Keep up the great work.

Vicki Wilson Netball

By Mrs Michelle Imhoff

Recently our Saints Netball team competed in the Vicki Wilson Cup, where the boys played against other secondary schools in the region. The boys had an outstanding day, winning all their preliminary games and coming second overall after losing to Smithfield High in the Grand Final. Congratulations to the boys on their strong team performance, enthusiasm and great sportsmanship. Thanks Mrs Rettke and Mrs Imhoff for coaching the team.

CISSA Sport

Saints entered the semi-finals with all 5 of our teams vying for a place in the Grand Finals. Our AFL and Touch Football teams continued their dominance with strong victories to progress to the Grand Final. Saints CISSA Basketball team entered the game after suffering two tight losses to Peace Lutheran College throughout the season. Ash Moore led his team to a victory with a 71-58 victory over Peace Lutheran to secure a finals berth. Unfortunately, the football and volleyball teams fell short in tight encounters to end their campaigns after dominant seasons during the round games. Good luck to our 3 teams in the finals next week.
