Debating News

A very keen band of debaters competed in the first round of the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) competition last Tuesday evening.

C Grade: Ashan Dhanapala (9 Riley), Hamish Knight (9 Aherne), Liam Moat (8 Jones), Trinity Newman (8 Jenkin), Lucy O’Shea (9 Jenkin) and Adeeth Samarakone (9 Jenkin)

D Grade: Mannus Clarke (7 Aherne), Amelie Kooloos (7 Millward), Jacob Markoff (8 Frew), Siun O’Malley (7 Jones), Anika Tadakamadla (7 Frew) and Hazel Ziffer (7 Jones)

The quality of the debates was very impressive, and I felt proud to be with such vibrant and intelligent young Girtonians. A significant contributor to the quality of the debates has been the weekly mentoring of our Senior debaters - Zoe Cuthbertson, (Debating Captain - 12 Jones), Oshy Kodippiliarachchi (11 Jones), Sophie Mayes (12 Jones), Remus Brasier (12 Millward) and Ava Griffin (12 Aherne). Zoe also provided extra coaching for the students prior to their debates and attended the competition to provide encouragement and support. 

Congratulations to Anika, Lucy, and Ashan who were awarded Best Speakers. We are looking forward to the next DAV Round in two weeks, along with the ICCES Competition in July.
