From the Classroom

Foundation

Week 5

This week in Reading, our focus has been learning to become an independent reader. This involves selecting a book from a book box and browsing/viewing the text/identifying sight words/looking at pictures for detail, as well as categorising the book into either non-fiction or fiction book. Our anchor chart to display our ideas on this topic says;

It looks like…

  • Sitting still in your spot.
  • Eyes are in your book.
  • Brain is thinking about the words and pictures.
  • Cool, calm, relaxed and quiet classroom.

The Foundation have really enjoyed this part of our morning.

We have continued our learning on Money with the added focus of counting by 2s. It is important that the children are familiar with counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to 100 when entering Grade One. If it is not a great night for Reading, try some counting aloud and recording some of these on a whiteboard or paper. Send it to school for important positive recognition. Photos in an email is a great way of sharing too.

We have also been enjoying 'Learn to Draw' videos with Rob. We did a helicopter earlier in the week, and on Wednesday we drew sloths.

Foundations love their Show and Tell day! It is not expected that they have to bring something and sometimes they might just want to “Tell”. They loved Scarlett’s harmonica and Fenton’s remote control front end loader.

Photos show another happy week at school 😊

WEEK 6

Our Literacy block has been filled activities such as Build a Sentence, Sight Word Tablecloth, CVC Look, Sound and Colour and Digraph ck cut/paste. Hoping you can recognise these tasks in this week’s photo gallery.

We have also utilised learn to draw videos to create ideas for writing and the Foundation students loved drawing a birthday cake. The children had so much fun hiding in the Staff Room to have a surprise HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Miss Pirie.

Developing book appreciation with our Independent Reading Boxes have also continued with a focus on the word “Stamina”.  We have a selection of books along the front classroom wall that we have enjoyed immensely. Building our stamina to read/browse for a long time without interruptions has been...calming, focussed and delightful to view the students engage in this. I have attached photos of some of our favourite books.

In Maths we have looked at a number line and using them for addition sums. A wonderful mini-lesson with Miss Jane was an introduction to this strategy of adding. You can find lots of mini lessons in ABC Education iview that are well worth viewing.

Thank you for ensuring your child has their Concert Costume bag back and let’s hope the weather and the mozzies are kind to us for next Thursday night!

Grade One

Thank you to all those who joined us in the classroom and learning street for reading last Friday. Students loved having someone to read to and share books with. This week we have been reading Pamela Allen as well as Aaron Blabey books. We have made a collection of stories by these two authors, which we will share with you all on Friday. Here are some of the photos from last Friday…
