YEAR F -2

Last week, everyone enjoyed having a four-day long weekend. It was the perfect opportunity to rest and recharge and get ready for the final busy weeks of Term 4, 2022.

As people of faith, we explored the significance of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. These two days are important days in the Catholic tradition. We shared our prior knowledge about what a saint is and as researchers, we found out about St Francis of Assisi through information texts. Those of us in Foundation, drew pictures about what we found out about St Francis of Assisi, making connections between the story of creation and how St Francis of Assisi cared for God’s creation. Those of us in 1/2 also sorted out our thinking by making the connection between All Saints Day, the Genesis story of creation and the work of St Francis of Assisi and his care of animals. We also discovered that the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi is celebrated on October 4th. This week, those of us in 1/2 will continue to sort out our thinking by making books and posters about St Francis of Assisi.

Here are some of our thinking…

Oscar- “A saint is a person who wants to be like Jesus.”

Amelia- “A saint is someone who cares about other people.”

Patrick- “A saint is a man or woman who tried to be like Jesus.”

Vivienne- “A saint is someone who does good things for other people, not just for themselves.”

Damien- “St Mary MacKillop helped people who had no food or money.”

Sophie- “St Francis of Assisi cared about animals and he looked after God’s creation.”

Sam- “St Patrick cared about all people.”

Harrison- “A saint is someone who does good things and helps people.”

Jacob- “St Fidelis is a saint, the name of our school.”

As inquirers, we explored the understanding ‘There are people and actions that can keep us healthy and safe’. Through picture books such as “Jasmine’s Butterflies”, “When Lyla got Lost (and Found)”, “Everyone’s Got a Bottom” and “A Little Book about Safety” we discussed situations that are safe and unsafe and what we could do to manage them or what trusted adults we could go to for assistance.

Those of us in Foundation were very busy helping to pack special bags for the incoming 2023 Foundation students. Together with the 5/6 students, we decorated the bags with a welcome to St Fidelis picture. These bags will be handed out on Monday 7th November as the 2023 students attend their 4th transition session.

Special congratulations to Abby, Vivienne and Alessandro who were the winners of the Foundation Maths Game Day which was held during the last week of Term 3. They received their medals and certificates at the whole school Assembly last Friday. Special thanks to Mrs Monaghan who organised such a fun Maths Day for us.

Looking forward to another great week of learning in F-2.

Just a reminder that as the weather warms up, please remember to apply sunscreen each morning.

Foundation to Year Two Team,

Leanne Wenckowski, Alycia Marsico, Stefanie Carriera and Alex Phillips,

YEAR 3/4

As members of a Faith Community, we engaged in praying the Rosary as a whole class. Through the beads, we follow the life of Mary and Jesus and thank and praise God.

As mathematicians, we are learning to name and describe the features of 2D shapes. In this learning activity, students cut out shapes and matched their names. Then, students colour coded each shape into categories (triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons).

This week we participated in our last Body Safe incursion. We would like to thank Jay for her time and knowledge with the year 3/4 students. We have learnt how to deal with our emotions, the parts of our body that are private/ public/ personal, how to communicate and play safely online, and who to talk to when we feel unsafe. Jay gave us finger puppets to record 5 trusted adults who we can go to when we need to talk.

Enjoy the week!

YEAR 5/6

Welcome to week 6 of the term! We hope that everyone enjoyed the sunshine on the weekend, and is ready for another exciting week of learning.

In Literacy, the students continued their study of different authors by reading and exploring the books written by Jackie French. We explored and compared the texts ‘Flood’ and ‘Drought’. Investigations have included comparing the similarities and differences between the two books and noting how Jackie French uses her unique style of writing and realistic illustrations to describe these two natural disasters in Australia. In Writing, students are continuing to write and improve their narratives - taking inspiration from the different writing styles of Margaret Wild and Jackie French.

As part of the Resilience Project, the students had the opportunity to reflect on the importance of sportsmanship. In groups, students collaboratively defined the meaning of sportsmanship, and in doing so, engaged in rich dialogue as to the characteristics of a good sports person. In a follow-up activity, students reflected upon examples and non-examples of sportsmanship.

The Year 5/6 students excitedly participated in our Maths Games Day. It was a fun-filled day of different Maths games and activities in which everyone had the opportunity to put their Maths skills and strategies into practice! In small groups, students worked collaboratively to work their way through 3 sessions for the day:

Session 1: Outdoors Physical Maths

Session 2: Strategy Games

Session 3: Problem Solving

All students are to be congratulated on the enthusiastic, cooperative and supportive manner in which they worked together with their teammates. A big thank you to Mrs Monaghan for organising the day and making Maths so much fun!

Here are student reflections on our Maths Day:

At the Maths games day, I enjoyed playing kono because it was fun, a bit challenging and entertaining. It was fun to verse others while teaching them how to play. (Maya 5/6VC)

At the Maths games day, I enjoyed playing the human bingo game where you had to answer a maths problem and put yourself in the square. (Zachary 5/6VC)

On the Maths games day, I enjoyed playing the relay game where we had to collaborate to find the correct answer and build the number with number cards. (Erica 5/6VC)

At the Maths games day, I enjoyed the different games where you needed to play with different partners. (Erica 5/6VC)

On the Maths games day, I enjoyed the measurement games where the teacher said to walk a metre; you had to try to do it within a time. You had to collaborate with your team. (Eva 5/6CG)

On the Maths games day, I enjoyed playing the replay game because we got to practise the timetables. (Ivy 5/6CG)

Have a great week!
