HSIE NEWS

Mr Jatan’s 7A HSIE class had the honour of bringing in delicacies to commemorate our Ancient India Unit on Friday, October 28. We had been studying Ancient India for the previous term, and as a way to wrap up our studies, we celebrated the many cultures and traditions through food.

For our class, each student was invited to bring cuisine from India. We had the option of a savoury or sweet dish that had some relation to the country. There were many mouth-watering meals, and it was amazing to taste the Marian Indian culture through these foods. It was also fantastic to have many Indian families create homemade traditional dishes, some of which have been passed down through the generations.

A few teachers were invited by Mr Jatan to join us in enjoying all these luxurious dishes. These teachers included Mr Blanco, Ms Sparkes and our Year 7 Year Coordinator Mr Morris. The celebrations went on for half the lesson and everyone had an amazing time. I was overwhelmed by all the amazing flavours and textures. My favourite dish was the homemade naan bread and the homemade curries.

Last term Year 7 HSIE students studied Ancient India. This topic was really interesting as we have seven Australian/Indian students in the class and they could tell us about the region they came from and what it is like to live there. We realised that there are many different cultures and religions that make up the Indian subcontinent. We then were able to transfer this knowledge to Ancient India and compare it to what it was like back then. To finish the unit we made replicas of Ancient Indian tiles and pottery typical from the area. We used air dry clay and then painted the tiles and pottery using the techniques that were used in those times. The students thoroughly enjoyed this part of the unit.
