Physical Education Report

Term four sees the return of the good weather and some outdoor sports. It also sees students spending the first 10 minutes of each PE lesson warming up with skipping ropes and elastics.

The junior school students (Foundation – Year 2) are practising some fundamental sporting skills. Using footballs and soccer balls they have focussed on improving their kicking skills. Later in the term, students will have a chance to use basketballs, netballs and even bats to practise and improve different skills.

Year 3 students finally had the chance to take part in Athletics events to score points for their Houses. Thank you students for your patience, and well done to all those students who participated in these events. Next, we will be moving onto striking skills and playing modified games such as tennis and t-ball.

Year 4 students started the term by playing a modified version of volleyball called newcomb ball. While playing newcomb ball students practised not only their throwing and catching skills, but teamwork skills too. They also learned the importance of playing a position.

Year 5 students will spend this term learning and practising the summer interschool sports that are offered in Year 6. Students have started with rounders and will be moving on to softball, cricket and tennis later in the term. The students are also involved in the Alternative Sports program – this term they are learning about and playing table tennis. See the Year 5 Spotlight for details.

Finally, the Year 6 students have been learning and practising the sports of badminton and roundnet. These sports are new to many of the students and have created new and difficult challenges, such as judging the speed of a shuttle and controlling strikes with their hands.

Year 6 students are also competing in the Summer interschool sports program against local schools. The sports played are tennis, softball, and rounders.

It has been a great start to the term in PE and I am very impressed with the students' eagerness to challenge themselves and learn new skills, tricks, and games.
