Year 2 Spotlight

Year 2 Spotlight

Despite the crazy weather, the Year 2 students have done a great job being flexible with the changes to their routine, nearly every day! Today the sun is shining, but who knows what tomorrow will bring…. It’s been lovely to see some students play chess, build Lego and watch ‘Phantom Pups’ together. As we get closer to the end of our first full year at school, we want to share some of the things we have been learning about.

Reading

So far this term, we have been learning to identify cause and effect events in texts and have practised reading fluently. Working with a partner, we used iPads to record ourselves reading aloud. We used a self-assessment rubric to identify our next steps for reading fluency.

Writing

We have been learning about fables. We know that fables are short, usually take place outside, have characters that are animals but act like humans, and include a moral lesson.

We have been incorporating our knowledge of Woi-wurrung words as character names or as the setting. Some Woi-wurrung words we have used are:

  • Yerin – bush
  • Yaluk – creek
  • Baan – water
  • Warin – Wombat
  • Wallert – possum
  • Marram – Kangaroo
  • Birrarung – Yarra River

Maths

We have been learning about fractions. We have identified halves, quarters and eighths in shapes and collections. We have enjoyed designing and making fraction pizzas! We have also been learning to identify and compare the mass of different objects. We practised hefting and using balance scales to compare objects found in our classrooms.

Inquiry

We have been investigating the forces of push and pull. We looked at different toys and identified which toys use push, pull, or both, to move.
