Chatham Happenings

An update from the students of Chatham Primary School

STEAM Fair

On Tuesday 15th November, a great number of Year 3 to 6 students offered to set up a stall at our 2022 STEAM Fair. The presenters did an incredible job in creating displays for their projects/experiments, as well as presenting their work to their Prep to Year 6 peers. I would like to thank the Science and ICT Captains, Mary, Sally, Siena, Gabriel, Oscar and Will, for showing leadership in organising this event for the school.

Mini Boss Incursion

The Preparatory and Year 1 students thoroughly enjoyed their Mini Boss Incursion last week. Students used their imagination to create human machines and were provided with a challenge to design a marble run and robot with their team members. This gave students the opportunity to think critically about their designs, ensuring all members of their team gave input. Here are a few photos of this wonderful learning experience!

Preparatory and Year 1 Excursion to Chesterfield Farm

Despite the rain and muddy weather, it was a perfect day to explore Chesterfield Farm!

On Friday the 28th of October, the Prep and Year 1 students were able to join each other on a special day out to Chesterfield Farm.

Here the students were able to learn about animal survival, how to milk a cow, along with the history of Chesterfield Farm. The exciting part was that the students were able to explore, feed and pat the animals with their raincoats and gumboots on, followed by enjoying an awesome tractor ride.

Thank you to our Parent Helpers for their assistance and joining us on this wonderful day!

Mont Albert and Surrey Hills Rotary Primary School Speech Competition

The MASH (Mont Albert and Surrey Hills) Rotary Primary School Speech Competition is now in its 17th year and this year Fran and myself were chosen to represent Chatham.  Eight other schools in the local area represented by two students were all competing to win with Toastmaster judges adjudicating the night. We had all written a speech based on our chosen subject from a list of twelve topics. My topic was titled ‘What’s better imagination or knowledge.’  Fran had chosen the topic ‘If you could have one superpower, what would it be.’

We both spoke for the evening and to our excitement I won 1st place and Fran 2nd place. It was such a thrill, and we were both super happy.

Since we had won our area, we were invited to speak at the Rotary Clubs of District 9810 Grand Final 2022 Primary Schools Speech Contest which was made up of twelve students who had won 1st and 2nd in their area. Unfortunately, Fran could not come on the evening however I competed for Chatham on the night. It was a very close contest with everyone speaking exceptionally well.  This time we were judged by Toastmaster international judges, and it was a nervous wait for the judgement. It took extra time as they had a very hard challenge with all the speeches being amazing.   After a lot of hard work from the judges’ the results were in and they said it was a very hard choice.  I was overjoyed to achieve second place. It was an amazing experience, and I am sad it has come to an end.
