Work Experience
Unlike the last two years, 2022 saw most of our 228 Year 10 students able to participate in Work Experience. Students were able to experience placements in a huge variety of industries, such as Education, Retail, Medical, Dentistry, Media, Building, Plumbing Electrical, Landscaping, Horticulture, Automotive Law, Hairdressing, Administration, Speech Pathology, Photography, Physiotherapy, Fitness, Hospitality, Astrophysics, Real Estate, Sound Engineering, Interior Design, Dance, Fashion, Veterinary Clinics, just to mention a plethora.
Being involved in work experience in one form or another provides an invaluable insight into the world of work. Benefits include:
- Career aspirations can be confirmed or the realisation that the career is not for you
- The understanding of the world of work is gained firsthand
- New skills are developed
- Team building skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- The relationship between what you are learning at school and what is happening in the workplace is developed
- Independence and confidence grow
- Motivation to continue with the career path you have chosen
- Exploration of Career options.
In 2023, Year 10 students will again be expected to participate in the Careers Experience program as it is an integral part of the Career Education program. The duration for Year 10 students is one week which will take place in the last week of term 2 (19th to 23rd June 2023) So now is a good time to start thinking about where you may like to do your work experience next year. Some occupations are highly competitive and sought after, therefore positions for work experience often fill up early and quickly.
In 2023 the applied learning program of Years 11 and 12 has a new title. No longer VCAL, it is now known as VCE - Vocational Major and Victorian Pathways Certificate. Students choosing VCE - Vocational Major have been encouraged to participate in two weeks of work experience to strengthen the skills required when employed as an apprentice or trainee.
Tips that might assist in attaining work experience are:
- Ask parents, relatives and family friends for help
- and advice on securing work experience.
- Google businesses in your local area
- Prepare a script of what you need to ask
- Create a resume if you don’t already have one as well as a covering letter
- A guide for Students and Parents/Carers is available here
Be Prepared Early
Drop off your details and resume to relevant businesses ie. Reece for Plumbing, Middy’s for Electrical, local hairdressers and cafes, childcare facilities and aged care facilities or visit Bunnings and ask to speak to some Tradies.
