Diwali in Year 3

Last week, the Year 3 classes learnt about the Indian Festival of Diwali by completing a range of learning experiences such as shared reading of Dipal’s Diwali, making our own colourful rangoli and writing a joint class construction of an observational recount explaining how we made sand rangoli.

Diwali Sand Rangolis

Last week, at school, the Year 3 students created colourful sand rangolis. We individually made our rangoli to celebrate Diwali. Diwali is the Indian festival of lights.

To start with, we watched a video about rangolis and how to make one with sand. The presenter explained what a rangoli is and then showed the procedure, step by step, in sequential order.

Next, we drew our design of diyas with a flower on dotted paper.  Mr. Black’s class traced their design onto paper plates while Ms. P’s class cut out their designs so they could trace them onto coloured paper.

After that, we traced over our designs with glue using a thin paintbrush. Carefully, the coloured sand was sprinkled onto the glue. Excess sand was shaken off the designs onto a paper plate which made rainbow coloured sand.  Rangolis were left to dry overnight.

Our created sand rangolis looked amazing and vibrant. We all enjoyed making our rangolis to celebrate Diwali.

Everyone should give it a try and make their own!
