A shift to online learning

Our IB students are commended for how effectively they have adapted to online learning.

Year 12 IB students were on the eve of their trial examinations when the COVID restrictions were put into place. An already tense time for any student, our Year 12 IB students were able to move past the initial shock and disappointment and refocus their attention to make the necessary preparations for completing examinations online. They have shown resilience and care for each other throughout the process. Each student has approached their online examinations with integrity and determination, understanding the importance of giving their personal best and showing perseverance to face the challenges presented each day. I have felt incredibly proud of them all.

Year 11 IB students have also adapted well to the online learning environment. We have postponed their formal examinations until next term, but students will continue with formative assessment over the coming weeks, having already completed a French or Spanish writing task this week. A key distinction of the IB Diploma Programme is the continuity of formative assessment. Students come to appreciate that all of their learning over the two-year course counts. Every piece of classwork, homework, practice performance pieces and participation in class discussion all contribute to their understanding and are therefore important. Rather than delivering just for assessment tasks, IB students know that ‘everything counts’. The completion of summative tasks, like examinations, are still an essential part of the process to prepare for final IB examinations, but it is the everyday learning focus that ensures long term academic success.
