Brain Breaks, Fractions and Reading Circles

It is very important that students take plenty of breaks to rest and reset. The children have been missing Class Sport time on a Tuesday so we have been doing a fun activity as a way to get exercise and have some fun.

The activity is called ‘Just Dance’. I put a video on the screen that has a song and a character showing dance moves. The students need to follow along with the character and copy the dance moves.

In Maths this week, the students have been learning about fractions. They have been learning how to find a fraction of a collection of items. We thought it would be a fun to do a hands-on activity by creating a necklace out of different types of pasta to represent different fractions. The students had to find a fraction of their pasta and then add it to the necklace. It was important to follow the instructions because the goal was to have everyone finish up with the same necklace in the end.

Over the past couple of weeks, the students have been participating in Reading Circles. The children were separated into groups based on ability. They had a selection of books to choose from. As a group, they needed to choose one of the books to read together. I have been giving them activities centered around responding to their chosen text. This week, the students created a character biography on one of the characters in their book. The character biography gives the reader a good insight into what makes a character special and how the author attempts to create interesting, descriptive characters.

Kind regards
