Our wonderful children
This week, students have started using their dirt, grass, sky handwriting books to practise letter formation.
In Prep A, B and C, students have been exploring the fiction book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and had a go at writing about caterpillars and their connections with the story.
In Prep D, E and F, students have been exploring the non-fiction book, Butterflies and have practised writing captions, labels and facts about butterflies.
Take a look at some of your FANTASTIC work!
This week, Grade 1 read four different books by the author Chris Collin. His books are funny, rhyming books about animals in Australia. Grade 1 practised finding out the meaning of unfamiliar words in these books and making connections between the stories.
On Friday, Grade 1 had the opportunity to meet Chris Collin on Zoom. During the incursion, they met one of the main characters in his books, Funky Chicken, and design their own front cover of a funky chicken book. The students were so lucky meet an author, whose books they had enjoyed so much! We are very grateful to Miss Megan for organising this! See some pictures of our incursion and work below!
Last week, we had another incursion to celebrate book week. The incursion was called ‘The Greatest Discovery.’ The students had a great time learning about the power of reading and developing a love of reading. Thank you to Miss Mez for organising the fabulous virtual incursion.
This week in Writing, students were learning how to write a persuasive letter. Can you guess what the topic was? I am sure a few of you have heard some very good persuasive arguments for getting a new pet in the last few days! We were all very proud of the way the students engaged with writing this week.
Grade 3/4 have had fun settling in and re-acquainting ourselves with SMPS expectations and routines.
In Maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We played top trumps with 3D shape properties. We even did a 3D-shape Scavenger Hunt around our Learning Level.
Our Inquiry topic this term is “Our Island Home”. So far, we have explored the environment around us, climate zones and why certain animals live in certain environments. Grade 3/4 even made their very own sun dial to track the time of day and learn what life was like before clocks (or iPhones!).
Week 3 was Book Week at SMPS. Grade 3/4 students still had a blast dressing up as their favourite book characters (even the teachers got onboard!)
The 5/6 Team had a wonderful time celebrating Book Week 2020!
We had author visits from Jackie French and Tristan Bancks who shared their writing experiences and process with us. We are currently reading one of Tristan Bancks' novels Mac Slater: Coolhunter and it was fantastic for students to be able to ask Tristan questions and learn about his other stories too.
Book Week Dress Up – We were very impressed with creative book themed costumes our students dressed up in to celebrate the end of book week!
Reading Buddies
The 5/6 students teamed up with Grade 2 to do some reading aloud. It was such a beautiful day so we read together outside in the sunshine.
