From the Year 6 Classroom

Science investigation into aviation

From Jane, Year 6 Teacher

S.T.E.M Day (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

On Monday before the public holiday Year 6 participated in a S.T.E.M Day (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The whole day was dedicated to our current Science Unit focusing on Aviation and Electricity.

Year 6 students worked in teams to complete the beginning stages of a balsa wood aircraft later to be tested on one of our two Thrust Generators. Continuing throughout the term students will test their plane's aerodynamics, speed, and calculate the distance traveled. From the first flight, teams will be able to experiment with the variables and make modifications to improve their plane.

It was a day of excited chatter, teamwork, safety, and of course...SCIENCE!

Another eventful STEM day in Year 6 flies by

We made model craft planes made from balsa wood. On this STEM day, we had a day full of science and learned about aviation. Using craft knives, we formed our wooden planes and got ready to take off. I think this lesson was very interesting and it was fun to work with friends. I can’t wait to test out the plane and find out what makes the plane fly and how it works.

I enjoyed learning about aerodynamics, and I found it pretty cool that we can make model airplanes out of wood.

This day has been a very enjoyable and educational session.

Some people think results will be that the plane is too heavy and that the propellers won’t be strong enough to lift it and others think that it’s going to fly at the start and then it will crash because there won’t be enough power and that it’s going to crash because we’ve never done this before. But overall, everyone can’t wait to test and fly the plane.
