YOUNG LEADERS' DAY

On Monday 27th March the school captains attended the Young Leader's Day Conference with Mrs Georgiou at the Melbourne Convention Centre. It was a great opportunity to hear from different leaders and what shaped them to be the people they are today. We were fortunate enough to hear Candy Hertz a TV presenter, Amanda Johnstone a tech inventor, Nazeem Hussain a comedian and children's author and finally Robert “Dipper” DiPierdomenico an ex Hawthorn Football Player and TV Commentator.

Candy Hertz has had many jobs in her life, she started out in advertising then decided to pursue her dream of being on TV and became a TV presenter. She has interviewed basketballers, footballers and many other people throughout her career. What makes Candy Hertz a leader is that she likes to do things that inspire young Australians to do what they want to do. One thing I learnt from Candy was that you don’t  always have to take the easy path to success. I was also lucky enough to ask Candy a question in front of all 3,000 students from across Victoria.

Amanda Johnstone is a tech inventor who grew up in Tasmania. What makes her an amazing leader is her bravery. At the age of 16 she wanted to start her own clothing store so she decided to call up the CEO of Cotton On and asked him to be her mentor. WIthout hesitation he said yes, she sent him her business plan and not long after he was able to help her launch 4 clothing stores in Tasmania that were affordable for everyone. Amanda inspired me to go out of my comfort zone even if I feel a bit uncomfortable and nervous.

Nazeem Hussain is a famous comedianNazeem from a young age noticed he was funny and later on in life became a comedian. But before he was a comedian he was a lawyer. He has just written his first children’s book called “Hy-larious Hyena”. We were lucky enough to get a signed copy for a school library yesterday if you would like to borrow it. Nazeem has taught me to be yourself and never try to be someone that you aren’t.

Dipper is an AFL brownlow medalist and a 5X Premiership player. He played for Hawthorn his whole career and is known as one of the most successful players of his time. What makes Dipper a leader is that he now does things to inspire young people and encourages them to do what they love most.

It was such a great day and we learnt so much. It is such a special experience that School Captains get to participate in each year.
