Learning and Teaching

Holy Week

Our Seniors created a presentation called, 'Jesus is Condemned to Death and Dies on the Cross' for a Holy Week para-liturgy.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PARENT/CARER HELPER THIS YEAR IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL?

We are calling on any parents/carers who would like to volunteer their time as `Parent/Carer Helpers’ in the Junior School this year, commencing in Term 2.

Our Literacy block runs from 8:55 am-10:55 am each morning and during this time children participate in partner/independent reading as well as a range of learning experiences related to Reading and Writing.

Parent/Carer assistance during these sessions (whether it be for part of the session or the whole time) is greatly appreciated by both the teachers and children.

If you would like to volunteer please email me at jforbes@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au and let me know the time/s (Reading: 8:55-9:55am and Writing: 9:55-10:55am) and day/s you are available to offer your assistance.

This is important as it will enable teachers to timetable parent helpers into their morning program. All volunteers must also have a current working with children check, with a copy to be provided to the school office before commencing in the learning space.

If you do volunteer to be a parent/carer helper I will be running an Information Session for helpers on Wednesday 5th April at 2:30 pm. Parents/carers only need to attend one session – please let me know which session you will be attending in your email. Please meet me at the front office at this time on the day you will be attending the session.

Thank you

Learning and Teaching Leader.

What’s happening in Music at SFS?

Senior Expo

In Week 9, the Seniors presented their work on Duration, Tempo and Dynamics to the Junior students in their Senior Music lessons. Rachel brought her Juniors over and the Seniors taught them facts about the different elements. It was great to see how the Seniors stepped in and took leadership roles and how engaged the Juniors were. We are very lucky at SFS to be able to easily combine all year levels to work together. Rachel and I are very excited to collaborate next term as we commence rehearsals for our 2023 Productions.

Juniors Orchestra work

In Week 10, the Junior students learned about the String Family. They looked at the differences between a Violin and Viola. Students have gained knowledge about the different families in the Orchestra and are able to identify differences between the families for example - percussion instruments are any instruments that are tapped, rubbed, shaken or hit to produce a sound. Students learned how to play ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ on the Glockenspiel and had explored an app called ‘Carmen’s World Orchestra’ on the iPads.

Senior Choir

The Senior Choir has been hard at work in Weeks 9 and 10 in Term 1.

Students performed at the Week 9 assembly. They performed ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ by Elvis Presley and ‘Heaven’ by Bryan Adams.

They were very excited to perform and wear their choir tops proudly. They also performed to farewell Fr. Des at the liturgy on Tuesday. They performed ‘Spirit Gently Come’ and ‘Our School Song’.

The students will be performing at Imasha’s wedding in the first week of the school holidays. I cannot thank the choir enough for all of their hard work and dedication. I’m very proud of all of them and look forward to hearing them perform on the holidays.

Well done !!!

DT News!

This term in DT the students have been participating in STEM projects which have been linked to their Inquiry focus of biological science. In doing so, this has enabled students to come up with solutions to real world problems as well as going through a cycle of research, planning, designing and reflection.

JUNIORS

Our junior students have been learning about minibeasts and their habitats this term. When looking closely around our school, we decided that it would be a great idea to create some hotels to help to increase the presence of minibeasts throughout the school.

The students were required to work in small groups to design a minibeast hotel using recycled materials and objects found in our environment, so that we were not creating any unnecessary waste.

It was so fantastic to see the students' ability to work together and problem solve when building their minibeast hotels. They are now hidden around our school in safe spaces and we will continue to check in on these.

To end the term, the juniors are practicing logging on to a device and their mouse skills through the activities that are located on the student portal. Remember, these activities can all be accessed at home if they would like to use these.

SENIORS

Our senior students have been participating in a STEM project through the Melbourne Zoo. Each group has chosen an animal that is at the Melbourne Zoo to learn about and then design an enrichment activity for the animal that helps it to either use its senses, move in natural ways or behave in natural ways.

In their small groups they have had to work collaboratively to create their design, and once approved have used Tinkercad to create their 3D prototype. We have just begun the process of printing these out. Keep an eye out around the school for these enrichment designs!
