Term 2: Week 2 - Junior Sport Update

What a great effort our Year 6 students put into their Supporters’ Day on Saturday. It was great to see and hear all the boys give their all in support of the First XI Football and First XV Rugby sides. I know the senior boys really appreciated their efforts. We look forward to Year 5’s turn on 22 July with Year 11. A big task lies ahead of them to live up to the standard set by Year 6. However, I know they are more than ready for the challenge.

With the start of the Winter season, inevitably due to the style of sport played on Saturdays, boys will come away with injuries. It is one of the unfortunate realities of playing any sport. I would encourage all the Junior School parents/carers and students to read Mr Fochesato’s article in this week’s Especean. In there you will find information on dress requirements should an injury occur.

On Monday, we had a number of Junior School boys participate in the CIS Rugby League trials. This is traditionally a very large and competitive trial. Boys come from all over New South Wales from all manner of independent schools for this trial. To the credit of the quality of our boys, many made it through to the possibles probables match. Congratulations to Ryan Wall of Year 6 who was selected as a shadow player. Congratulations to all the Junior School boys for the manner and effort they put into the trials.

Last Friday saw the beginning of Junior School Chess. This is our first venture into the Primary Schools Chess Competition, Inner West Zone and was a new experience for boys and staff. Competing against Trinity Grammar, the boys battled fiercely, but unfortunately could not overcome a slick Trinity team. Congratulations to Mr Yallouris for all his efforts hosting all games for the first time and to our boys for their efforts and graciousness in defeat. We look forward to more action on the boards this Friday afternoon.

On Thursday 11 May, the Junior School will make another attempt to run the Annual House Cross Country Carnival. Boys will walk down to Hudson Park and run along a track around the oval and the adjacent parkland. The carnival will run for the first two periods of the day. Boys are to wear their colour house sport uniform to and from school. The College tracksuit should be worn if the weather is cold. All age groups will run on the day. The 12s will not have an age champion awarded, as this honor has already been awarded in our efforts with the rain. The 11s and 10s age groups will have age champions awarded on Thursday. Points for all runners will be awarded to determine the winners of the House Trophy for 2023.

I am aware that the carnival coincides with rehearsals for Mother’s Day Mass. All boys that are required for band rehearsals will attend the rehearsal as a priority. To my knowledge there is only a very small number of boys that will be impacted.  For the boys involved in choir, they will need to bring their College uniform on Thursday. After the conclusion of the Cross Country Carnival, they will travel out to Rosehilll with Ms Grape to rehearse for the Mass on Friday.

With Term 2 now in full swing, attention turns to preparations for the Junior School House Athletics Carnival. This year we will hold the carnival on Wednesday of Week 9. Boys will be asked in the Daily Announcements to attend time trials for 100m and 200m championship events as well as trials for shotput, discus, and high jump. Any boys interested in participating in these championship events must listen to upcoming announcements. It is expected that all boys will compete in their house 100m and 200m events, tug of war and novelty events. The carnival will be held on Breen Oval.

Good luck to all teams playing this weekend.
