Year 10 Camp Report

At the start of Week 2, Term 2, 160 Year 10 students went on a camp of a lifetime to Central Australia. We went in two groups, with two buses on both.  Camp 1, left on Monday 29 April and Camp 2, left on Wednesday 1 May.  The first day was spent on the bus, as the drive to our first stop at Marla was around 20 hours, with several stops. Most students did not get a very good sleep on the bus throughout the night.   However, the bus ride was a great way for students to get to know more about the other students on their bus.

On the second morning, we arrived at Coober Pedy where we visited an Opal mine and had a tour of the town, including the 'Uunderground Chapel'.  Coober Pedy was extremely interesting as we learned about how people live underground.  After eating lunch, we headed off for our first night in tents at Marla.

After a good night catching up on sleep, we headed off to Alice Springs.  At Alice Springs, we discovered a lot about the town’s history. We visited the Royal Flying Doctor Service, The School of the Air, which is a school that is online, so students who live in remote areas do not have to move away from their families, just to get an education. We also did a cultural visit and learned a lot about how the Indigenous survived and live today.  We also had the opportunity to buy some artwork and throw a boomerang.

Everyone was excited to visit Kings Canyon and it was so spectacular. We did a hike through the canyon, saw some great views and visited the Garden of Eden, which surprisingly, had a body of water.  Some students got the chance to fly in a helicopter over the canyon to see what it looked like from above.  Personally, I thought it was so beautiful overall.

On one of the nights we stayed, we had to go stargazing. Without light pollution, we were able to see so many stars. It was so incredible to think of how many stars there really are, that we do not see here in the suburbs.  It was a great time and place to have some time to ourselves and really appreciate all that we were doing.

Uluru was our final stop and even though we were a tad sad to leave, it was incredible to see the big rock up close. We had to do a few walks and watch the sunrise and sunset where the rock changes colour.

Despite a few slight bumps in the road, camp was an experience no one will ever forget.

Thank you to the parents for allowing the camp to go on and thank you to all the staff who volunteered their time or helped behind the scenes; without you, there wouldn’t have been a camp.

Year 10 Captains

Year 10 Captains Report

Market Day, held on Thursday 2 May, was an exciting event where Year 11 Unit 1/2 Business Management students ran stalls in the Middle School Quadrangles at lunchtime.  The students sold many tasty treats that could be purchased by all year levels.  Together, students raised a total amount of $1,892.40 that will be shared between different charities.

To help celebrate 100 years of Lilydale High School, there was going to be a drone photo of the whole school, on Thursday 2 May.  However, due to poor weather on this day,  the photo was postponed to Thursday 16 May, which turned out to be a lovely sunny day.

On Wednesday 24 April, we had a whole school Anzac Day Assembly, where we had a band performing the song, ‘Don’t Dream It's Over’ and student leaders talking about the importance of remembering and commemorating the soldiers that fought and protected our country. The Ode was read and ‘Last Post’ played, followed by a minute’s silence.  To finish the assembly, the band performed ,‘Flame Tree’.

A reminder to all Year 10 students, school immunisations will be held on Thursday 6 June

During this term, Year 10 Students will also have a Careers appointment. The appointment will focus on looking at study and career pathways over the next few years.  Students are required to bring a device to the session and complete their Career Action Plan. prior to attending. Students can find this by going onto Compass, clicking on their name and then Insights.

There has been a new GYM built in the P Wing, which consists of three large sized rooms that have been sectioned into a Weights Training Room, Circuit Room and Cardio Room. This allows students to move more freely around the room and have more area to work out.  Having this new gym is a great opportunity for students to learn more about improving their sporting performance and health through training.
