Room 9 and 10 – Creating a Chain Reaction Contraption

This term in Design and Technology students from Room 9 and 10 have been working to create a Chain Reaction Machine based on the work from American cartoonist Rube Goldberg. The chain reaction-type machine or contraption is intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way. In groups students had to plan and design their machine, source materials and create a series of simple movements (roll, drop, push, pull etc.) with the action of each triggering the initiation of the next, eventually resulting in achieving a stated goal. The students presented their machine to the rest of the group and completed a self-assessment. They learnt a lot and had plenty of fun.

Japanese News

こんにちは,

Konnichiwa

It's Olympic time!!! The much anticipated Tokyo 2020 Olympics are almost here and we have begun the week by getting to know the official mascots Miraitowa and Someity.

Miraitowa is the official mascot of the 2020 Summer Olympics, and Someity is the official mascot of the Paralympics. The checkered design on both mascots was inspired by the Tokyo 2020 official logo, while Someity's pink design was inspired by cherry blossoms. Both fictional characters have various superpowers.

Created by Japanese artist Ryo Taniguchi, the mascots were selected from a competition process which took place in late 2017 and early 2018. A total of 2,042 candidate designs were submitted to the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, which then selected three pairs of unnamed mascot designs from the batch to present to Japanese elementary school students for the final decision.

 Have you seen them yet?

Working Bee

On Saturday 26th June, some West Beach Primary School staff and families came to help tidy the vegetable garden and orchard space for a working bee. The garden looks so tidy and neat now and we are working on preparing this area to become an outdoor learning space for the students. Thank you to all the staff and families who helped support the working bee.

Science News

The middle primary students have been learning about light. They have been discovering that materials can be translucent, transparent or opaque. They have also been learning about how light can be reflected, refracted, absorbed or transmitted. Do you know what these terms mean? If not, as the middle primary students!

Student Leaders Visit to AFL Max Centre

Last Monday the WBPS student leaders visited AFL Max Centre to participate in “A Day in the Life of an Elite Sportsperson” Program. The program was aimed at educating students about the importance of developing healthy lifestyles and positive wellbeing and utilising strategies used by sports people to create life long learners.

The students were highly engaged through physical activity whilst experiencing education about respectful communication, collaboration, courage, caring for others and self direction.

This was certainly, a fun and valuable day of learning and gave student leaders the opportunity to discuss how they could continue to promote a positive culture and model positive actions and choices at WBPS.

Mr Kitto and I were particularly impressed by our students’ strong collaboration skills, respectful and responsible behaviour and willingness to challenge and encourage each other throughout the day.
