Year 12s - the time is here to make VTAC Applications for Tertiary Study next year
So what IS VTAC?
The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) is the organisation where all Year 12 students will be making their application for tertiary study through. It is the sorting house that connects what courses students want to do, and what Universities or TAFEs have to offer. Like match making for careers and is a “one stop shop’ for all applications. Students will make just one application but will have eight preferences of courses that can be applied for.
VTAC opened Monday 2 August and timely applications close on 30 September 2021. Every Year 12 will have a meeting with me this term to complete their application. Part of this process is applying for SEAS (Special Entrance Access Scheme) which is special consideration that every student can apply for. Next newsletter I will include an article on SEAS to help with the understanding of this. I will also ensure that we can apply for anything that will help secure a position in their course of choice.
Last week I invited a guest speaker from Deakin to talk to the Year 12s during Extended Pastoral about SEAS. This week I had a session on the process that we would be undertaking this term to register and make an application through VTAC.
Students are encouraged to make an appointment with me as soon as they have registered. The appointment book is kept on the desk out side my office in the Joseph Centre.
Before we apply for tertiary courses, every student will need to complete plenty of research to pinpoint what they would like to do after school. This includes exploring different subject areas, courses, institutions, careers and reflecting on what you discover. The key question you need to ask yourself is: 'What is right for me?'. The VTAC Guide to Researching Tertiary Education is designed to lead you through this process. This is attached to with the other resources further down this page and is a great resource.
Year 9 & 10 Subject Selection
Our virtual Subject Selection Information last Thursday was a great success with many families attending to find out more about Year 9s moving up to Year 10 mainstream or LEAP, and Year 10 students moving up to VCE or VCAL.
We know there is a lot to take in on such a night, and many decisions to be made. To assist you with this we have put together an electronic information pack for you where you can find some of the answers to questions you may have. This was then emailed out to Year 10 parents and students.
For those of you that missed it, or for anyone else who is interested, we have included the attachments here.
Please find attached the following resources :
- A visual guide to VCE and VCAL and their career direction post secondary school;
- A visual PATHWAYS guide of qualifications- what is the order of qualification and which qualifications lead into higher ones;
- Glossary of VCE terms;
- Prerequisites for 2024 - a guide to subjects needed to enter into different university courses and that must be undertaken in VCE – this is a large document that outlines courses by university and TAFE listed in alphabetical order- look for the institution and then for the course you may be thinking of. This is not required for those undertaking VCAL (this will be done on a one to one basis with VCAL staff);
- VTAC Guide - Researching Tertiary Education – this is a “get started “ guide for those who are unsure of where to begin. VTAC has great information to help with researching- all the available courses form Universities, TAFE’s and other Private Providers are listed here along with what each course is all about, their ATARS and what subjects are required to get into the course. A guide to how to navigate this begins on page 10 of this document;
- Open Days – a list of virtual Open days happening this year. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT STUDENTS ATTEND SOME OPEN DAYS IN YEAR 10, SOME IN YEAR 11 AND THEN SOME IN YEAR 12.
You CANNOT go to all of them in Year 12 as there are multiple happening every weekend in August. It is imperative that students have an idea not just WHAT they want to do after Year 12, but also WHERE they want to do it.
Year 10 students also received a hard copy booklet produced by VASS – Where to Now 2022?
Don't know where to begin? Career Profiling is a good place to start
A reminder that Year 9 and 10 students began the subject selection process with an incursion to undertake a online career profiling tool to help them identify careers that would suit their interests, skills and personal attributes.
For those students who missed out but are still interested in completing this, please contact me to arrange to do this. If you have questions about any of this subject selection process, please ensure you speak to a teacher about this or myself - Careers and Pathways Coordinator. I can be reached on elena.flodstrom@nazareth.vic.edu.au or on 9790 8177.
Good Luck to each of you with this process – LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN!
