Let's talk experiences
Year 8 and Online Learning
My experience with online school has been great so far, I find that when I am at home, I focus more on the set task I am doing, and I learn as much as I do at school. Our teachers have successfully made our classes each day not only enjoyable but also for us students to be able to understand the task that is being given. Our year advisors have even set up challenges every morning to make this experience of being at home a bit more enjoyable. Even though I am learning at home it still of course isn't as effective at home as at school, I miss being face to face with my peers and my teachers.
Xara Zaineddine (Year 8)
In my opinion, online learning is not as exciting as school. We can’t really go out to meet friends like we do at school and we spend a lot of time doing things in a single chair or bed. But it’s still enjoyable because we don’t have to change into our uniforms. The work our teachers give us is the same as the other terms, as if we were sitting in the classroom - so we don’t have a lot of work and we don’t have to stress out too much. I also really miss going to school and seeing other people instead of seeing them behind a screen. It would be really nice for the lockdown to be over soon.
Isabelle Nguyen (Year 8)
Adapting to online learning was pretty easy because we did the same thing last year for a few weeks. Although I like not having to wake up as early, online learning can be quite difficult because you need to make sure that the teacher knows that you are there and sometimes it can be difficult to communicate properly. I miss school because it is much easier to not only talk to your teacher but also to get work done. Some things are very hard to do online.
Veronica Rolevski (Year 8)
Online schooling has been a hectic experience for me to adapt to. At first, I felt so unorganized and confused about where half my classes were. Although, I quickly adapted to what we did last year during Term 2. Before online learning occurred, I never expected it to happen again. Some things that I enjoy about online schooling include sleeping in longer than usual. I get to enjoy the relaxation and sleep before attending 6 hours of work. Additionally, exams are currently postponed, which relieves my stress from overworking myself (studying). When I heard the news, I was ecstatic. Aside from the positives, I really miss seeing and hanging out with my friends. I miss us walking around the school laughing like crazy. Another thing I miss is the school overall. I find it extremely easier to communicate with teachers at school than online schooling. Online schooling has completely changed the way I attend school and is sometimes more difficult. Sitting in front of a screen for about 6 hours really does strain my eyes, but I am grateful for the breaks in between my classes. Overall, online schooling has been a rollercoaster ride for me. It includes my mixed feelings about it; relaxed, yet so stressed.
Trish Nguyen (Year 8)
As I move around the house, going between studying and taking my dog out, I feel a little bit closer to my family staying home all the time. Knowing how my parents live while I go out to school, being jealous of my little sister, seeing how little work she must do during online schooling. Online schooling has provided me with hot food every meal, hugs from my parents, smiles from my little sister and days that I can sleep in. With this, I still miss normal schooling. I do enjoy working at home, the ability to mute myself on video chats and the way I can hide my camera when I have a bad hair day. Yet I still miss school. It's because I miss walking to school every day, hanging out with my friends and seeing my teachers in person.
Lucas Kim (Year 8)
I miss school. I mean, not online school. But, like, I miss being in the class, interacting with others, actually doing the work and not just typing it up like here. To be honest, right now, I'm too embarrassed to open up the mic to say something or open up video from my camera. Online learning isn't that great, and I can't stress that enough. But being right there, in the moment, in class - I miss that. I miss everything about school.
