SCC took a group of runners up to the State Cross Country on Tuesday to race against representatives from schools across Tasmania. Each of the 8 races had over 200 children running, and our students ran very well. They were such a fabulous group. Their cheerful attitudes and the support and encouragement they offered each other was wonderful. They all represented our school so well as they ran with courage and determination. Well done!
On Thursday, at lunch time, Grade 6 students will be running a range of activities for PYP students in their classrooms. Any PYP student is welcome to attend.
There will be a brief information session about the exciting up and coming Grade 6 Exhibition on Thursday 22nd July, 7:30-8:00pm. Please come along so that you are informed and can best support your child through this process.

Grade 4/5 de Lacy students explored the ways that persuasion can influence people’s responses. The students used persuasive devices to create television commercials, write persuasive texts, and create billboards which promote various forms of responsible consumerism. A couple of students even made their own adverts for SCC.

In Science, 4/5 de Lacy have been learning about the properties of matter.
What defines a solid? Is it hard? Can you scratch it? Is flour a solid?
What about honey - is it a solid or a liquid? In what conditions?
Can you see gases? Do they take up space?
We have learnt that various states of matter have different freezing and melting points.
When salt is sprinkled on ice, for example, it causes the ice to melt. This reaction creates a heat energy transfer or endothermic reaction. Water freezes at 0°C. A saturated saltwater solution freezes at -32°C.
And Science is fun: we used this information to make icecream! See photos below.

For the past three weeks we have been learning about identifying states of matter. What is a solid, a liquid and a gas? We have been learning about their properties and how they react to different things. One of the experiments we did was we made moon sand out of sand, cornflour and water. When you squeeze it and put pressure on it, it would behave as a solid, when you let it go, it would go back to a liquid. This is called a non Newtonian fluid.
We learnt that a solid is an object which you can scratch, is more dense than a liquid or gas and is stronger. For example, you could scratch a rock but if you tried to scratch a liquid or a gas your fingers would tear through. A liquid is a substance which holds the shape of the container it is in. We learnt that gas can be weighed and takes up space by weighing two balloons -one empty and one with air in it.
One of the experiments we did was to put some Berocca tablets in water in two small bottles. One cap was open and the other was closed. When the Berocca touched the water in the bottle without a lid, it started to fizz, while the bottle with the lid on exploded which showed that gas takes up space. It needed somewhere to go. You can watch our experiment below. Enjoy the squeals from our class as it explodes!

We all loved this UOI and we hope we can do something like this again soon.

It seems that some students are unsure about the rules around borrowing from our library, so here is a reminder:
Thanks very much,
