Grade 5 & 6 Health Day

Grade 5 & 6 Health Day

“PUBERTY”

On Friday 25th November, Grade 6 students undertook Puberty Education followed by Grade 5s on Friday 2nd December.  Over the course of the day students were learning about the physical, emotional /or social changes that occur during puberty, specifically the female and male reproductive systems, puberty changes and what puberty is, puberty management and reproduction and conception (Grade 6 only).  Grade 4 girls were also invited to attend one of the sessions which focused on periods and period management. Students participated in a range of activities and discussions, along with viewing several videos.

Puberty education is an important component of the primary school curriculum as it provides students with the opportunity to gain knowledge and awareness of the reproductive systems, puberty and relationships. This knowledge is vital in the establishment and maintenance of a healthy image of themselves throughout the rapid changes that puberty brings about physically, emotionally and socially.

Here is a little snap shot of the day and some student thoughts:

Today we learnt about puberty and all the weird stuff that goes with it, like sperm.   It was good that boys got to learn more about the girl changes and likewise for the girls.  We found the videos about the puberty changes for boys and girls really helpful.

Zander 5/6 and Rhys 6C

We learnt about how babies are made, the moods associated with puberty and that a wet dream is not like wetting the bed. I enjoyed making the puberty resource and the activity about puberty changes, working out if they were specific to boys/girls/both genders.

Java 6B

Today we learnt about how a baby is made and how sperm is made.  I enjoyed the videos and activities.

Indi 6B

We learnt about how boys’ and girls’ reproductive systems work and the similarities and differences.  I liked the activity where we had to estimate how much fluid you would lose in a period and in a wet dream.

Ruby 6A

Today we learnt about girls and boys body parts and how babies are made.  We liked the guessing seminal and menstrual fluid activity and making and presenting our puberty information resource.
