VCE Media

A huge congratulations to all VCE Media students that have delivered stellar content throughout the year. From video essays to abstract photography and socio-political documentaries to found footage horror films, the quality has been engaging, thought-provoking, and consistently exceptional.

As a department, we are excited by recent investment in the local industry – a whopping $416 million from one international company alone - which promises to present opportunities and pathways for our emerging creators, and we look forward to seeing the content they produce well into the future.

Further to this injection of funds, a state-of-the-art virtual production infrastructure is to be built in Victoria, including one of the largest permanent ‘LED volumes’ (high-tech digital screens that display background environments and visual effects on set) in the world. This technology has already been used to bring worlds to life in the ground-breaking Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, and in even better news, the infrastructure will be longstanding; available for local and international productions to utilise while remaining a training ground for budding film practitioners.

So, to all the writers, directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, sound technicians, and fx gurus, follow your dreams and keep those stars in your eyes.

Art & Technology Wrap Up

This year has been full on with new electives, another successful round of Year 7 & 8 rotations and how could we forget our spectacular Art and Technology Showcase?

The beginning of the year started off with a bang, having Mr Leithhead, Miss Flandez and Ms Steen join our team. This led to some incredible classes and new ideas for the department in the future. To see what they got up to in their classes have a look through the photos below.

Our VCE students this year showcased their amazing skills with their folios and overall products. Their tireless efforts throughout the year really paid off, just check out the photos from the Showcase (published in in our last email) where we had the opportunity to get our community to see just how talented they are. With guest speakers coming out and singing their praises about the work we had on display we could not be prouder of our VCE Art and Technology students. The confidence our Textiles students had on the catwalk shows you just how proud they are of themselves.

Year 9 & 10 students worked hard each semester to get the most out of their electives.

Our Food Studies students kept their teachers full with their customised pizzas and left them always wanting more when they walk to their staffrooms smelling whatever delicious food was being cooked that day.

Our Product Design students made some pretty incredible items, including the lap desks. Just ask Miss Gu-Yang; she ran to the storeroom to claim one of the ones left behind, she loves it!

In Textiles we had some incredible hoodies and tote bags created by our Year 9’s who trialled many techniques before making their final product. Let’s not forget the students who crocheted cardigans in Year 10 and the other incredible products that came out of that class.

Our Systems Technology students created some pretty awesome Automated Cars using Arduino based code to sense a variety of things. Students who completed Year 9 or 10 IT created some impressive games, from creating their own sprites to all the code behind the scenes to make them as great as they are.

Year 9 & 10 Art was also a hit with so many subjects on offer. Our Ceramics classes created some inspiring pieces which have been displayed around the school. The time spent perfectly sculpting them definitely paid off when we saw the final results, fresh out of the kiln.

Our photography students experimented with different exposures, photoshopping skills and development to get that perfect picture. Some of these are breathtaking and are displayed throughout A block. The students who took our Visual Communication and Design learnt how to complete digital rendering, build architectural models, and design a pavilion. We are so excited for our students to transition into VCE, Early Start or Year 11 and see what they bring to the A block space next year and the Showcase.

Year 7 & 8 students also hit the ground running, completing their Technology rotations and Art classes for the year. The Technology rotations had students completing Systems Technology, Product Design, Food Studies, and Textiles over the course of the year, producing some incredible work. In Year 7 students created Bunting in Textiles, a sign in Product Design, The Make a Difference project in Systems Technology and a range of delicious food in Food Studies. The Year 8’s built on their skills making more complex dishes in Food Studies, a circuit in Systems Technology, a bird box in Product Design and a soft toy in Textiles. Year 7 Digital Technology learnt the basics in computer usage, Excel spreadsheet formatting, algorithms and all things basic coding.

In Art, students worked on a range of techniques and dove into their understanding and application of the Art Elements and Principles. They looked at drawing techniques, painting skills, and creating something 3D. Their work has been outstanding and been displayed in the Art building and featured in some of our Instagram posts. The Visual Communication unit allowed students to dive into technical drawing and the analysis of design. Student completed a design process project and put their skills to the test creating their models.

How could I forget to mention the reintroduction of the School’s Instagram page. This page has gained a lot of support from our students and wider community and is a platform for us to share the incredible work happening in The Art and Technology department, as well as showcasing the incredible things happening across the school. Next year this platform is going to be ramped up again with more exciting things happening. Keep an eye out!

We hope 2023 is just as exciting as 2022!
