 Game of Life

The Term 4 focus for our Year 7 & 8 Humanities classes was Economics and Business:

Year 7s have examined the types of resources used to make goods and services, the problem of scarcity and the impact this has on price. They then looked at the influences on consumer choices and the rights they have as a consumer.

Year 8s have examined the way that government policies can influence markets to help meet the needs and wants of consumers, before focusing on the ways they can develop enterprising behaviours individuals need in the workplace. They also spent time looking at the types of financial goals that individuals and businesses establish, completing a cost benefit analysis based on a case study.

In these final weeks of Term 4, some of our Year 7 & 8 classes have had the opportunity to play the ‘The Game of Life’ board game. This screen-free game play had students teaching each other, working out personal strategies and applying their financial awareness to the unpredictability of real life events that disrupt the best of plans.

We have certainly had some enthusiastic classroom noise as students negotiated their way through the things life may throw at them in this authentic learning experience. They were kicking goals with:

  • Numeracy skills
  • Literacy skills
  • Negotiation skills
  • Decision making skills
  • Dealing with salary differences of their peers
  • Emotions of the human experience – elation, disappointment, rage, greed, indecision…. It has it all!
