Reflection

Reflection. The end of the year is an opportunity for students to review the year and their progress in each learning area. We have generated End of Year reports for students and parents, and these will be published this week. I encourage you to read the reports, review the learning behaviours in each subject, and note the range of grades achieved and where there might be room for some greater challenge or growth.

During Step Up Students have had the opportunity to reflect on their end of year exams, to read or hear the teacher’s feedback and to ask questions. However, an important part of the process is student reflection, and this is an area I would like to develop further with our student body in 2023.

Each piece of work becomes the starting point for a conversation between the student and the teacher, and between the student and the parent. Students who can produce a written reflection about their work helps them to acknowledge the next steps that are required for them to make progress. In writing the words, students begin to own the process of learning and developing knowledge and skills. The example below is the words of an English student:

One of the wonderful things about a reflective practice is that it offers the opportunity to for us to be grateful. I am thankful for the way our students have worked consistently this term and embraced the opportunity to Step Up. And I am grateful for the team of excellent staff that help our students become the best versions of themselves.

Thank you. It is a privilege to work with your family and partner with you on this learning journey at The Hamilton and Alexandra College.
