On Tuesday 27th June the Northcote High School chess team went to Penleigh Essendon Grammar School to attend the Northern Star Chess Tournament.
We had a total of 11 representatives, Jack Puccini, Joseph Hatton, Thomas Leou, Hugo Waples, Alex Borgeest, Jeffery Ng, Ben Murphy, Darcy Puccini and Megan Leung. We won the zonal school champion and also Jack Puccini was awarded the star of the tournament.
Joseph Hatton was the most improved player winning 5 out of 7 games. He also performed a very strategic chess game with the Hatton Manoeuvre (seven move check mate).
Darcy and Megan were awarded chess piece key rings for an excellent game.
Jack Puccini, Northcote High School Chess captain, won 7 games out of 7!
Thomas Leou had an outstanding tournament, but in one particular match, despite being ahead on time in the early stages, lost by one second.
Hugo won the year 7 overall medal with a total of 5 wins.
Overall today was a great day for the chess team and we have taken home the coveted Northern Schools zonal trophy.
