Bentleigh East

The Science Learning Area at Bentleigh East has had a busy Semester 1 across all year levels.

The Year 10s have been busy completing a major practical inquiry. The students have been researching how copper is used and recycled. This has involved a practical element of the project, using some strong acids and chemicals to test out and extract copper.

Our Year 9s have been focusing on Electricity and learning how to build circuits. This has culminated in the students having a clearer understanding of house circuits in electronic equipment and even how households are wired, both for safety and functionality.

Our Year 8s have experienced the cellular level of Biology, looking through microscopes at various samples: from leaves and tree roots, to tissue, muscles and even intestine tissue. They have learnt the magnification of our microscopes and how best to view the images.

The highlight for our Year 7s this semester was their trip to Werribee Zoo in Term 1.

Students undertook an education session and were some of the first students allowed back at the zoo after Covid restrictions eased. They were then able to travel on the Safari Bus and also walk around the different areas of the zoo, to experience the wildlife, especially that of animals that are native to Africa and other parts of the world. The excursion coincided with the Ecosystems topic the students were studying at school. Inside that topic, we focused on food chains and food webs.
