Term 2 Inquiry Learning at GWPS

This term we have a Sustainability thread running through the Integrated Inquiry Curriculum for all levels.  There is an overarching inquiry question connected to sustainability and the learning for the term addresses the Victorian Science Curriculum, Critical and Creative Thinking and Ethical Capability.

Our Prep children have been learning about environments and the United Nations Sustainability Goal: Life on the Land. The children demonstrated their learning through the amazing home learning tasks that were exhibited this week.

As we move through the school the Inquiry Questions build depth. The Year 1 inquiry questions was “Why do we need to look after our environment?” and the Year 2’s had “How can repurposing materials impact the environment?” Below are examples from the student’s home learning.

The United Nation Global Goal: Life on Land – End deforestation and restore degraded forests was explored by the Year 3’s. Their inquiry question for this term has been “How are living things interdependent within the environment?” The children have investigated habitats and how living things rely on each other to survive.

In years 4 students investigated a variety of chemicals used within foods, beauty and cleaning products and were able to demonstrate the impact of these on the environment.

In Years 5 and 6 science discovery increases with the exploration of flora and fauna and what might impact on their survival and how changes within the Earth’s internal and external environments provide humanity with sustainable options.

Our children have demonstrated that through the different inquiry questions they have an understanding of sustainability from surface learning to deep consolidation throughout the year levels.
