What's happening in our classrooms

Grade 3

Grade 3

Literacy

As part of our Literacy program in term 2, students in grade 3 have been preparing for NAPLAN through our daily reading and writing programs.

In Reading, students have been learning about the different questions we can answer while we are reading (QAR – Question, Answer, Relationship). We have analysed a variety of texts including persuasive, information reports, folktales and narratives, while focussing on clarifying unknown words in the text to gain meaning.

In Writing, students have been busy planning and drafting both persuasive and narrative texts. All students have had the opportunity to write a letter to persuade other people on an issue that is important to them. Some children have tried to convince their parents about making their own lunches whilst Mr McGlade received lots of letters from students, persuading him to ensure “All children attend Athletics Day at Mackellar Primary School!”

Numeracy

The Numeracy units that we have focussed on so far for term 2 have been place value and time. We are learning to represent numbers in different ways by renaming, expanding and modelling numbers. You might like to complete the worksheet below with your child by modelling the number 4502 in a variety of ways.

When we are reading time, we are learning to use the words ‘past’ and ‘to’ to describe time on analogue clocks. This is really tricky! A great way to help your child at home is to ask them to read a random time for you. What time is it now? How would we read this as

digital time (e.g. 5:45pm) How would we read this as analogue time? (e.g. quarter to 6).

For the remainder of the term, we will be learning about addition and subtraction using money and length. Here is a great website that we use in the classroom to assist students in developing quick recall of basic addition number facts: https://www.arcademics.com/games?subject=addition

Inquiry

During term 2, grade 3 students have been working on our unit titled “Our World”. We have been researching the 7 continents of the world and the flora and fauna that live on each continent. Students will be focussing on 'survivability', the different climates around the world and biodiversity. After researching, students will use their new knowledge to create a presentation to share with others on “How we can educate people about the importance of biodiversity in our world?”

Attendance Cup

The Attendance Cup is back at Mackellar and guess who the lucky recipients were for excellent attendance in Week 3?     3B of course!

Congratulations to all the students in 3B for making a big effort to come to school each day. A very important part of each student’s learning is to be on time and at school each day.

Will 3B be lucky enough to receive the cup for another week? Or will 3A have excellent attendance? Stay tuned!
