Prep

The word of the week is YES! Preps are also saying yes to measurement, looking at various objects (informal units) and comparing length, using words such as "longer" and "shorter". Preps are also busy building dioramas, creating a 3D habitat for the underwater creatures they have created for Breaking News in the previous 2 weeks of learning from home.

Grades 1 and 2

We asked some Grade 1 students about what they have been doing at school since lockdown ended.

Harry B "We have been practicing our handwriting. I would like to learn how to do joined-up writing but I know that we will do this in grade 3. We have also been playing maths games including race to 100."

Elena "We wrote a story based on a chapter of The Wishing Chair that we read as a class. My story was about Tabby Cat, who was chasing the children but they calmed it down. We have also had a lot of fun doing soccer for PE."

Grade 2 students have been exploring their "learning from home" superpowers. They created superhero versions of themselves (we think they're pretty great, so please take a look at the photos below). They have also been learning to track their thinking when they read. They are making notes of connections, predictions, questions, reactions, visualisations, and inferences.

In Maths the focus has been subtraction and various fluency games have helped them to visualise what this looks like.

Grade 2 students also received their first letters from their pen pals from Coldean School in Brighton UK! They are looking forward to learning more about the similarities and differences between the two different Brightons.

Grades 3 and 4

Archie "We are writing stories about planets in our solar system. I chose Jupiter because it has nothing in common with other planets - it is unique because it has a permanent storm."

Henry "We did the Grade 3 Spelling Bee today. We had to try to spell various words. There was a boy winner and a girl winner from each house. I thought I would go out on my second word but everyone else had trouble with it too so I got through and ended up coming second."

Tyler "Yesterday we did Soccer. We learned to bounce the ball on our head and to dribble. We did a one-on-one goal shooting game, which was a lot of fun."

Grade 3 and 4 have been learning about the solar systems and the planets. They have written about a planet of their choice and have created 3D models and diagrams of the planets. The BBPS Spelling Bee has also created a lot of buzz!

Grades 5 and 6

Congratulations and thank you to our wonderful Grade 6 leaders who ran successful Wellbeing Wednesday workshops via Zoom for our students last week!

Grades 5 and 6 are real film buffs! They are now completing the final part of their director's study of Rabbit Proof Fence, reflecting on what they learned from the film and creating their own films using some of the film-making techniques they have discovered.

Tilly (Grade 6) "We watched Rabbit Proof Fence and I have enjoyed working with a group to make our own movie using some of the film-making techniques"

Science has also been a major focus, with students creating websites about Australian scientists and their contributions to science.

Camille (Grade 5) "I have been working on a website about Svetha Venkatesh, who is a scientist who created an app for people with Autism. It helps them with colours, words and pronunciation. We have been using Google Sites to add pictures and information and create our sites."

James C (Grade 5) "My website is about Professor Mark Dawson, who works on Leukemia and has discovered treatments for patients. The websites will be up by the end of term"

Maths workshops have allowed students to explore various aspects of addition and subtraction, including percentages and integers.

Katherine (Grade 6) "We have been doing maths workshops. I did Monopoly Moguls - we played in teams and  drew cards with questions that related to calculating the tax on properties as a percentage"

Ivy (Grade 6) "We did quizzes that included questions on money and weight and there was a menu where we had to work out what people ordered based on clues"
