STEM - Bebras Challenge
Earlier in Term 1, Years 3-6 students at St John’s participated in the first round of the Bebras Challenge. Over 32,000 students in primary and secondary schools throughout Australia took up the digital technologies challenge and worked individually, in pairs or small groups to solve a variety of problem solving tasks involving pattern recognition, coding, algorithms and logic. This program is organised through Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Education and Outreach program as a Digital Careers initiative and aligns with our STEM program.
At assembly on 31 May we will present certificates to those students who received a Credit, Distinction or High Distinction.
Years 3 and 4

MATHS COMPETITION
Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition
On 25 March students in Year 5 and 6 were given the opportunity to compete in the annual CAT(Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition) through the Australian Mathematics Trust. Eleven students elected to compete. The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition is a one-hour problem-solving competition which seeks to identify computer programming potential. Some questions test the ability to accurately perform procedures, others require logical thought, while the more challenging problems require the identification and application of algorithms.
Congratulations especially to the following students who excelled
Harrison Coates - Certificate of Distinction
Elisha Beh- Certificate of Credit
Connor Crawley - Certificate of Credit
Sophie Janssen - Certificate of Credit
Purchase a toy and help a child in need
As a part of our Prep - 2 S.T.E.M unit of learning students have been exploring the physical properties of objects. Students have been investigating what objects are appropriate to place in an Operation Christmas Child shoebox. We are planning on sending many boxes full of items for children in less fortunate countries. These boxes cost $10 to deliver so students are holding a toy stall tomorrow to raise funds to pay for the postage. Toys will cost either $1 or $2 and a raffle will be held for a bike. Please help us by participating in this day by either donating some toys no longer used and/or purchasing some toys.
