NEW ADDITIONS TO MCKINNON SECONDARY COLLEGE

On behalf of the Health faculty and our Health and Human Development (HHD) students, we would like to welcome three new additions to our McKinnon family.

These yet to be named, life-like babies have been purchased as a valuable teaching tool as part of the HHD Unit 2 curriculum and will be a source of excitement for years and years to come for our students. Current Unit 2 HHD students will be given an opportunity to keep these babies for a 24 hour period over the week following their exam, in order to get first-hand experience of parenting (a topic that was covered as part of the curriculum).

Emily Andjelic (Year 11), one of our current HHD students will share her thoughts about what it will be like to look after the babies:

“Having the opportunity to take these life-like babies home is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity that both myself and my fellow students are looking forward to undertaking.

As we’ve had such a difficult year due to Covid, this will be something to enjoy and learn from. It will help increase students' understanding of the criteria in Unit 2 of HHD; Development - what occurs during infancy as well as valuable parenting skills. This new program provides an opportunity to increase students' responsibility and respect for school property and the babies themselves. Students will come to realise the dedication our parents put into raising us into the respectable and sensible individuals we are today.

Overall, I am looking forward to sharing this experience with other classmates, family and friends. I would like to thank the HHD faculty for making this initiative possible and introducing these babies to the school community.”
