A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to Ella Cairney, Year 10, for recently taking out first prize in the 2021 My Brother Jack Awards - Senior Secondary Short Story category for her work “Stitch”.
I share this link to Ella’s story, alongside other prize winning entries. Ella’s work stood out amongst a strong and larger than ever field so she should be very proud of herself.
Glen Eira Council commented on the highest number of entries from McKinnon Secondary and I hope this continues to grow.
Each year on November 11, Remembrance Day, we mark the date in 1918 when the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. It was the end of the First World War.
The day originally commemorated the 330,000 Australians who served in this war, and more than 60,000 who died, but has since become a day to remember those who have served, died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
On Remembrance Day 2021, we held a minute silence to honour, recognize and remember all veterans, including those who served in WWII. We also acknowledge the sacrifice made by families on the home front.
Two visits were arranged last week to the new campus. It is indeed coming along beautifully and will be a fabulous place to belong to next year.
Michael Kan, Peter Quinn and four Year 7s joined me on Wednesday and met the Minister of Education The Hon. James Merlino and our local member for Bentleigh, Nick Staikos.
On Friday Michael Kan and I met Nick Staikos and the representatives from Glen Eira Council. I cannot wait for all of the students and staff who will be working there to see the place finished. It indeed sets a new standard for school construction. A wonderful addition for our school.
World Kindness Day is celebrated this Saturday 13 November. I share this video that was created by Myles Kelemen - Class of 2019 and his talented team: Lani Hammam (Year 9), Hannah Foran (Year 9), Gisele Hennequin (Year 9), Ilya Zyuzin (Year 9), Karleen Han (Year 12), Manasi Deshpande (Year 12), Harry Mills (Year 11), Helen Chen (Year 9), Ananya Jha (Year 9), Mischa Kong (Year 9), Georgia Foran (Year 11), Laura Wharton (Year 11), Ben Mizrahi (Year 11), Jack Carrafa (Year 9), Sabri Bayanta (Year 12), Sam Bajracharya (Year 12) and Evan Grenda (Year 12).
I thank the community for the kindness they continue to share.
Thank you to parents who have helped us to transition the students back to school and into full summer uniform. We have changed a few items of uniform, but as always there will be three years of transition.

These are well and truly underway and have gone very smoothly. The other year levels will have exams during their double periods. These assessments are very important and provide invaluable feedback about what students know and understand.
