Auslan Update

Throughout this semester in Auslan classes, students have been growing their signed vocabulary through a range of cooperative and communicative learning activities.

In Weeks 5 & 6, every student across the entire school (unless absent) gave a signed presentation in their Auslan class. Presenting in front of peers can be nerve-wracking for many students at the best of times, let alone in a language that is not their primary language. How fabulous it was to see that every child rose to the challenge and was able to independently demonstrate their signing skills to an audience. I was rather proud to observe the growth in vocabulary retention, hand-shape accuracy and fluency.

Our talented Preps introduced themselves to the class, without the use of voice and demonstrated their understanding of signed letters and numbers. The clever Grade 1 students gave a presentation about a family member, showcasing their family, animal and colour vocabulary. The fabulous Year 2 – 6 students presented their perspectives and preferences about school (with increasing difficulty), including appropriate facial expression and at times even audience participation.  Well done to all our happy signers!

Help! Help! Help!

The sustainability and gardening teams are looking for some donations for a few items they need to create exciting things in the garden.

  • Gumboots….we still need lots of gumboots please!
  • Large pre-loved plastic pots (diameter approx 30cm)

Please bring them to Mr.Flintoff’s room!

Thanks again for your support of the children.

PE & Sports News

On Tuesday 25th of May we sent 60 students from years 3-6 to represent St James in the District Cross Country, held at Ruffey Lake Park.  Students competed against 13 other schools, running either 2km or 3km depending on their age group.  We were so proud of the efforts the students put in on the day and the way they conducted themselves while representing St James.   They really did leave everything on the course as recommended as discussed in our meeting prior to the day :)

Our school did a fantastic job with 20 of our students qualifying for the Division Cross Country scheduled at this stage for Thursday the 17th of June.  Congratulations to the following students who will compete on the day.

With still a few weeks away, please make sure you maintain your fitness during this time. Lockdown is a great time for all of us to get out there and go for a walk or a jog with our families, bike rides, kicking the footy or throwing a netball, Grade 5/6's you have been doing lots around fitness sessions this term, the options are endless.

Unfortunately due to the extended lockdown we have had to postpone the Winter Sport Gala Days as planned. We are hoping to reschedule the 5/6 Gala Day to the last week of term, that is if restrictions allow, otherwise we may need to look at the first 2 weeks of term 3. Division finals of these sports are expected to take place in week 3 of term 3 and we want to give students the opportunity as best we can to make these. We aim to find a date for the Grade 4 Winter Gala Day in Term 3 as soon as possible.

Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me catherine.wall@sjvermont.catholic.edu.au
