Year 7 Students Only:

Training Concert Band Information and Try Out Night,

7.30pm Tuesday 3 March

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you may be aware, the band program at Frankston High School is an essential component of the school’s extra curricula activities.  The program involves approximately 200 students who perform in a variety of bands, all of which enjoy great success.

Each year we form a new Training Concert Band for Year 7 students.  This band is for students who have had little or no previous musical experience in a concert band setting.  The instruments involved in this kind of band are Flute, Trumpet, Clarinet, Trombone, Oboe, Saxophone, Percussion, Double Bass, Tuba, Bassoon and Euphonium.

Benefits

There are many benefits to learning to play a musical instrument, especially in a band environment.

Being part of a large ensemble helps to develop attributes such as resilience, empathy, self-confidence and mindfulness.  The process of learning to play a musical instrument can help in the development of spatial and abstract reasoning, verbal memory, self- expression and literacy skills.  Learning to play a musical instrument also broadens your options when it comes to VCE as your Instrumental Music study can be taken as a VCE subject.

It is also a great way to make new friends and have fun!

Information And Try Out Night

If you would like your child to be a part of this exciting program, you and your child will need to attend our Information And Try-Out Night which will be held in the Music Centre commencing 7.30pm Tuesday 3 March.

Don’t forget that all students must be accompanied by a parent or adult representative.

On the night we will provide detailed information about the program, advice on the best choice of instrument for your child and the options for obtaining an instrument.  There will also be a performance from last year’s Training Band.

Please note that the evening may take some time as each student will be given the opportunity to try their preferred instrument and we expect to take at least 60 students into our new band!

If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like your child to be involved I can be contacted by email at psharp@fhs.vic.edu.au

The concert band format has long been considered an ideal way for students to learn music in schools.  I hope you are interested in being involved in this dynamic and very beneficial program and I look forward to meeting you at our recruitment night.
