Visual Arts

In conjunction with their Inquiry Learning unit focusing on connection to country, the year three and four students have been looking at the art of Elizabeth Cogley, an Australian wildlife artist who specialises in painting Australian mammals in their native habitats.  Students discussed the techniques the artist uses to make her subjects look so realistic.

Students then painted their own Australian mammal. Students used watercolour paint for the background and used eucalyptus leaves to print foliage onto their work. Acrylic paint and oil pastels were used to depict the mammal, students were encouraged to add lines and crosshatching to create texture on their animals.  They have done a fantastic job, here are a few examples.

The preps have been looking at how far different objects can roll. They compared how far a big marble and a small marble could roll and then they compared a large ball with a small ball. This week they looked at how different surfaces affect how objects roll by rolling an object down a smooth ramp and then a bumpy ramp. They need created a graph, which is one way to combine mathematics and science.

Students in grade 1 and 2 made paper helicopters this week. They then compared their helicopter to their partners' helicopter by making one set of wings slightly smaller than the other. When they trimmed the wings, it made that helicopter fall faster to the floor.

In grade 3 and 4, the students worked in teams to plan and produce a game that has to use a magnetic force. We discussed the game Magnetic Fish, which is often played in Kinders. In our last week, the students will assess their peers' games. There were great ideas presented by the students.

Grade 5/6S made periscopes to help explain how you could see a dog around a corner of a building and then this week they explored shadows by creating and measuring the shadow of a glue stick! The students also had to create a bar graph using the data collected, which combines their mathematic and science skills.

French

Prep:

The prep students are learning a colour song. Here is the video if they want to practice at home:

Grade 1 and Grade 2:

The students will be assessed in two weeks. In Grade 1 they will have to demonstrate that they can spell numbers 1 to 10 in French. In Grade 2 they will demonstrate the spelling of numbers 1 to 20. Here is a video to practice at home if they wish to:

  • For grade 1:
  • For grade 2:

Grade 3 and Grade 4:

The students used our puppets to practice speaking. Each puppet had to grab an object from the pencil case and explain what it was:

  • Video 1: Georgie, Nikki, Matilda, Zayden
  • Video 2: Zara, Clarissa, Nicole, Chaw
  • Video 3: Jasmine, Advaith, Mila, Charlotte
  • Video 4: Caleb, Jack, Ava, Indie

Grades 5/6:

Now that the students can use various expressions to describe someone's face, they are preparing a giant 'Qui est-ce?" (Guess Who)card game that we will play in French next week. Here are some of the characters they drew for the game:
