5-12 Swimming Carnival

By John Forde

Friday, 24 February saw the return of our House Swimming Carnival. This historically ran with the Years 7 to 12 students. This year we were able to include Years 5 and 6 students as well.

The day had students competing in their age groups in the 50m butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and even a doggie paddle event, before competing in the 4 x 50 m relay team event. With many students participating and doing their best in the pool, we saw 19 students make it to the next level swimming carnival in Echuca.

There were lots of other fun activities including a dunk tank, which gave students the opportunity to dunk a teacher, with many students lining up to have a shot at dunking our new Principal Mrs Walsh, as well as the P-6 Principal Mr Barnes. Students also competed in volleyball games and finska whilst not in the pool.

At the end of the day the all-important students vs teacher race saw two Mellingtons hit the pool along with Mr Brzozowski and the new trainee Will Mitchell. The students did a fantastic job but to the delight of the teaching staff they were just no match for the teachers, even after Mr Mellington gave them a significant head start.

Overall, it was a great day had by all and it was great to see students and staff in their house colours and cheering on.  A special thanks to the teaching staff who worked so hard to make the day possible. Especially Helen and the ES staff with all their work preparing the food and drinks for the day, the TEC boys who cooked the barbecue, Darryl who made it all possible with setup and pickup, along with Mr Coombs, Mr Frazer, and their students who ran the dunk tank and volleyball all day.
