‘Reading for Pleasure’ Wide reading program at Star of the Sea
Last week our Year 6s accompanied by Mrs Joplin and Mrs McNamara had their first ‘Redaing for Pleasure’ wide reading session in the Star Library. It was very exciting for our Year 6s to experience a ‘High School’ learning environment. Mr Chris Pearson, Mrs Fox and Miss Austin making up the amazing Library staff at Star of the Sea. They engaged our children with fascinating details and stories of the workings of such a vast Library space. They organised a detailed scavenger hunt through the library where children found clues in a number of rich texts. These clues created some very funny silly sentences related to some inspiring books.
Before leaving, the children had the opportunity to browse and have the expertise of the library staff to make recommendations. We look forward to visiting the Star Library in our next Library session.
The Year 6s loved the experience. Here’s what they had to say…

I found the Star of the Sea library book hunt super fun and an amazing experience that actually taught me many new things about books, authors, libraries and genres.
I really enjoyed working as a team and completing the book hunt with my team finishing first place in the fastest time
Once we had found the book we searched for a bag number, line and word then wrote it down. We took turns and shared everything around!
This was something I wouldn't forget and definitely a good primary school memory.
Thanks so much to Mrs Joplin for giving us this opportunity because it was awesome!

On Wednesday the 1st of March the Year 6 students went to the Star of the Sea library to experience what a high school library is like. When we got there we started a scavenger hunt with clues to help find a book and in each book there was a word we had to get. After we did the scavenger hunt we got to borrow some books. Overall it was an amazing experience and we look forward to going back.

Last week on Wednesday the Year Sixes went to Star of the Sea for a reading session. We had so much fun and we were so grateful that Mr Pearson and the other Librarians set up a book hunt where we got clues of what book to find. We went off and had lots of fun exploring new genres of books, which then helped us choose what book to borrow from the library. I thought it was a great experience to read and look at books that are in a high school library that might be more tricky or maybe for more mature readers!
Thank you to Star of the Sea for making us feel welcomed and I hope we can go again.

On Wednesday the 1st of March, the grade sixes went over to the Star Of The Sea Library. There were quite a few STAR girls in the library who had a free period and they were studying. We played a scavenger hunt game where we had to find certain books to make a sentence. I was in a group with Nieve, Lenni, Katie and Scarlett. Our sentence was “Okay Bedchamber, I need sleep.” My group got help from one of the teachers, his name was Mr. Pearson. At the end, we got to borrow a book of our choice. I borrowed a book called Teardrop. We all borrowed them under Miss Joplin’s name (she is so nice). Then we left and all went home.

One day the Year 6 class went to Star of the Sea and did a book hunt where you had to find the right book from clues. Then you would get a line a page and the word from the page and it would say a word. Once you had all the words you would get a sentence. Sophie's group finished first and my group finished 3rd. After that we all chose a book from the library (well not all of us), we all had a great time and then went back to school.
Author’s Spotlight
Each month in the Library we spotlight a famous Author. This month it is none other than everyone's favorite… David Walliams. Author of some of our favourite books in the St James Library such as Grandpa's Great Escape, Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny and The Boy in the Dress.
David Walliams has captivated children all over the world with his award winning tales. Come join us in the library to find one of his great stories and discover the fascinating world David Walliam.
Look out for what author we spotlight next month!!
Library Upgrade!
In keeping with the changes we are making throughout our beautiful school, the library is also getting a little facelift!
As well as more books and more learning areas for our students to use, we are creating a little space to cosy up and read and this is where we need our St James Families help!
Do you have a sofa, pot plants, 2x armchairs and/or some clean rugs in good condition that you no longer need and would be happy to part with? If so, please send though photos to Mrs Joplin ajoplin@stjamesbrighton.cathjolic.edu.au. We would obviously love a donation, however if this is not possible but you can help in anyway, please let us know.
Thank you for helping us improve our library and make it an inviting and welcoming space to encourage a love of reading!
Book Drive
Finally a big thank you for all your donations of books to our library!! The Year 6s along with Mrs Joplin and Mrs Nicola have been overwhelmed with the kindness, enthusiasm and generosity. We can't wait to process all the books and watch the children start reading. The winning class will be announced in Assembly tomorrow!
