Sports Update

Daryl Porter, H&PE/Sports Coordinator F-12

What a busy two weeks it has been for Year 3-12 students and staff! Our annual Year 7-12 and Year 3-6 House Sports Days have been held, enjoyed and celebrated.

The Year 7-12 House Sports Day event held on Friday 17 March at Bowker Street Oval was a huge success. The students supported their Houses well throughout the day with many records broken, participation levels increased, and the general atmosphere was enjoyed by all who attended. This year, due to increasing amount of participants, we were blessed with the assistance of old scholars who helped with officiating. They were Lara Sarre, Matthew Rohrlach, Nathan Rohrlach, Sam Scarman, Zoe Smith and Fraser Western. These old scholars did an excellent job and were also very keen to compete in the grand finale relay, taking-on the Year 12 boys, girls, and male and female staff relay teams. The official competition was tight all day with Topaz prevailing on 2294 points, Emerald 2244 points and Ruby on 2101 points. Student attendance and their members involvement proved to be the most influential factor in determining this championship, so well done to Topaz House and their student leaders helping to build a strong, united community.

The combined-campus Year 3-6 House Sports Day event held on Friday 17 March was another successful event. Student attendance was at an all-time high and helped to create an atmosphere that participants, staff and spectators were able to experience and enjoy. The Year 10 PE student officials did an exceptional job at their allocated event. These students not only officiated their event, but assisted students by giving them cues to work on, encouragement and guidance. The continual support that our Year 10 PE students have each year for this event exemplifies what our College community is all about; looking to serve, support and encourage young and upcoming athletes. Well done Year 10 PE students!

The official competition was the closest I have ever experienced in my time at Emmaus. The speed at which data was being processed determined which House was in first to third place and this continually changing leader board created much interest among the students who were regularly checking in every 10 minutes. Each and every House at some point during the day was the leading House! At no point did a House lead by a large amount and it came down to the relays, to see which House would prevail. The final scores saw Ruby in third place on 1735 points, Emerald runners up on 1771 points and Topaz Champions achieving 1790 points. The student House leaders spoke very well at the end of the event showing sportsmanship, respect and pride for their respective Houses.

For both of our House Sports Day thank you to all the staff, old scholars, spectators, competitors and outside organisations for their support, generosity and encouragement. These are significant events for our College community and it is a collective that enables them to be a continued success.

Students who performed well in the various athletic events will have the opportunity to represent the College at the upcoming SACSA Athletic Competitions. More information will be communicated to those identified and selected in the respective squads.

On Monday 3 April our Year 3-9 students will be taking part in our Cross Country event held at Bonython Park, running along-side the River Torrens on sealed and unsealed paths. Students will attend their usual lessons before or after the event depending on when they come out to be active. Students just need to wear their H&PE uniform, bring their water bottle, recess and lunch depending on when they are scheduled to be at the venue. Times for each participant will be recorded and those who were involved last year will be able to see their progress having both times included. These personal times with their H&PE athletic results will be communicated via a certificate that families can view before the end of Term 1. We look forward to being able to provide another physically active community event that enables students to meet their daily physical activity requirements and assist in their personal wellbeing. Parents/guardians are more than welcome to come watch and support their children taking part, specific information including times and distances will be communicated to families very soon.

In the last fortnight we have also had a number of Junior School students wish to trial for various SAPSASA District sport teams. Congratulations to Jordan (Year 6) in being selected in the Softball District team, Lamell (Year 4), Josiah (Year 4) and Isabella (Year 4) in being selected in the District Swimming team. These students will be competing against other Districts and have the potential to be selected in the relevant State squad that compete at Nationals later in the year. We wish these students all the best with their personal performances and hope that they are able to learn from the experience and enjoy it.

Winter Season weekly sport registration forms have been sent out to students and parents/guardians and will be closing very soon. Any student wanting to be involved in weekly Soccer or Basketball during Terms 2 and 3 make sure you email sport@emmauscc.sa.edu.au to hopefully be accommodated to take part in this upcoming winter season.

If you have any other questions or queries regarding sporting matters do not hesitate to speak to your child’s H&PE teacher or contact any member of the College H&PE / Sports Department.
