What subjects do you teach here?

I teach Psychology, Health and Career and Humanities. 

When did you start teaching here?

At the start of this year. 

Where are you from?

I grew up just outside of Montreal, on the Canadian east coast; the French speaking part.

Where have you previously worked?

Since becoming a teacher, I have worked at Wandiligong PS, Mount Beauty PS and for the Falls Creek Winter Alpine Academy. 

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?

A maple tree 😊 Because of its beautiful colourful autumn leaves and sweet nature. Just like me haha!

Favourite saying/quote

"Kid's, it’s bedtime!"

Weirdest thing you have eaten?

Vegemite hahaha no kidding. I don’t get it. It is not good at all. 

Favourite animal

Carlos of course!! The best dog there is. 

What would you do if you found a penguin in the freezer?

Make him a slide so he can get out of there!

What is something interesting students have learnt about in Psychology this year?

💩 Poo! Fecal matter transplants and the links to depression.  

What are your interests?

I grew up skiing and snowboarding, and this is still a big part of my life. The last few years, I have picking up mountain biking which I absolutely love too. I am super interested in human behaviour hence why I studied Psychology and am so happy to be able to pass this passion of mine onto my students this year. 

If you had a choice between two superpowers, being able to read minds or teleporting, which would you choose and why?

Teleporting without hesitation. We have so many family members living overseas so would be absolutely awesome (and way cheaper) to be able to teleport. 

Favourite place in the world?

That’s too hard to answer. Too many beautiful places on this Earth. Mount Beauty is definitely up there though. 

Best study tip for students?

Stay on top of your work so that you don’t get overwhelmed. 

If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs—such as food and water—were taken care of, what animal and famous dead person would you want to have with you?

Carlos (saw that one coming didn’t you) and Robin Williams. 

Do you speak any other languages?

I am fluent French speaker which is my first language. I am currently learning Spanish and speak limited Indonesian. 

Favourite App?

My exercise app and probably the weather one too. 

What are you listening to?

Joe Rogan, The Northern Folks, Caamp and morning acoustics. 

What are you reading? 

National Geographic on ways to improve our memory. 

Worst holiday destination?

Never took a holiday that I regret but went to Sydney on the weekend and probably wouldn’t holiday there! 

What do you enjoy most about working here at Mount Beauty Secondary College?

Obviously the staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming but I am especially enjoying seeing students I taught years ago in primary school, and getting to teach them different subjects. 

We finish the interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million. What would you do?

Buy a Catamaran and sail away into the sunset!! 

Interview with Heath Matheson

Welcome to Mount Beauty Secondary College.  Are you ready for your first official “grilling”? 

 Sigh. I guess so 

What subjects do you teach here? 

This year I’ve been teaching Year 8A Maths and have just taken over from Mr Flower, teaching Year 11 Chemistry 

When did you start teaching here? 

Way back in 2005 as a graduate student. It was pretty hard to pick me out from the Year 12’s 

What do you love about maths? 

It has a concrete right or wrong answer.  

What do you hate about maths? 

Finding a real-life purpose for dividing fractions.  

Best subject at MBSC? 

Easy - Snowsports 

Do you have a favourite mathematical formula/equation? 

The derivative formula. It’s just so simple but so powerful 

If you were a dog, what breed of dog would you be and why? 

Huski – I love singing badly while running through the snow. 

Favourite joke (G rated!) 

Well, since I’ve just switched from teaching maths to chemistry, I’ve been trying chemistry jokes in class. But so far I can’t get a reaction.

Most disgusting thing you have eaten? 

I used to go on a lot of multi day horse trail rides. One morning, in the middle of nowhere, there was no milk for breakfast. Fortunately, one of the mares was lactating so I milked her straight on my weetbix. It tasted warm and fresh.  

If you could only wear one colour shirt for the rest of your life, what colour would it be? 

Blue 

Country you would like to visit next 

Ngarinyin Country would be great. (Kimberly region) 

Pepsi or Coke? 

Pepsi for sure but I now prefer my caffeine more pure.  

What would you do if you found a tiger in your classroom? 

Start singing Roar by Katy Perry 

Best study tip for students? 

Try not to fall behind. It’s really hard to catch up 

If you were stranded on Mt Everest which famous reality-tv star would you want to have with you and why? (and you can’t say none! 🤣) 

What is this reality TV you speak of? I’d like to spend my last day with Bandit from Bluey. I think we’d get on well.  

Most interesting scientific discovery of this century? 

Crispr technique of genetic modification. It’s so easy we could nearly do it here at school.  

If you were offered a free trip to space by Elon Musk would you accept?  

Absolutely – provided it was quite short and a return trip.

Favourite ski mountain? 

Hotham 

Best ski run in the world? 

I will keep searching for this one.  

What do you enjoy most about working here at Mount Beauty Secondary College?

Tick off some adventures like heli and cat skiing in Cananda and some family adventures. I’d also try and live everyday life fossil fuel free.
