Eureka Swimming Carnival

On Friday the 3rd of March, Beaufort Secondary College competed in the Eureka Swimming Carnival. The day was a great success with BSC finishing fifth place out of the eight schools competing.

The day got off to a strong start with Evalyn Hayward securing third place in the 100m Freestyle in the 12 – 15y/o Girls age group. Year 7 student, Issy Cahill, who was two years younger than all the competitors in her age group, narrowly missed out on a ribbon, coming fourth in the 50m Breaststroke. Matilda Venes put in a great performance, coming third in the 15y/o Girls 50m Breaststroke, while Tom Lyons managed to win his way through to the next stage, winning the 16y/o Boys 50m Breaststroke. Tom also managed to come second in the very difficult, 50m Butterfly and third in 50m Freestyle, helping him towards Runner Up position in the 16y/o Boys age group.

‘Queen of the Pool’, Ev Hayward, won her 14y/o Girls 50m Breaststroke, as she did with all the other 14y/o Girls’ events, including Butterfly, Freestyle, and Backstroke. This dominant display led to her being crowned 14y/o Girls Age Group Champion.

Freestyle was an area of strength for Beaufort, with Baxter White, Rory Bourke and Lily Peacock all earning themselves red ribbons for second place finishes in their respective races, while Eastyn Carr got himself a green ribbon coming third in the 18 – 20y/o Boys Freestyle. Cooper Cahill scored himself a coveted blue ribbon, with a first place in Freestyle. He then went on to place second in Backstroke, carrying him in to fifth place in the 16y/o Boys age group.

Other top five place finishes across the age groups went to: Baxter White, who placed fourth in the 12 – 13y/o Boys, Lily Peacock in the 16y/o Girls and Eastyn Carr in the 18 -20y/o Boys, both placed fifth.

The last individual event for the day was the Backstroke. Zavier Duff and Ella Kerr both did well, coming in third place in the 14y/o Boys and 15y/o Girls respectively, along with Meg Lyons, who was unlucky to come fourth, narrowly missing out on a ribbon by under a second in the 12 – 13y/o Girls Backstroke.

The Carnival concluded with the Medley and Freestyle Relays. Considering Beaufort’s size as a school, we did well to enter teams in these races, relying on younger swimmers swimming up an age group. This was exemplified by Nic Stares, Ben Grant, and Tristan Drinkwater who, while being in the 15y/o age group, swam up in the 16y/o age group. The 14y/o Boys relay team, comprised of Billy Welsh, Zavier Duff, Baxter White and Rory Bourke, performed strongly, taking out third place in the Freestyle and fourth in the Medley, courtesy of a stirring effort from Baxter, who showed some school spirit and had a crack at the Butterfly leg. The 16y/o Girls Relay team, consisting of Lily Peacock, Charlotte Sporton, Ella Kerr and Evalyn Hayward came second in the Medley and went one better, winning the Freestyle.

Thanks to Year 12 students, Emma Thompson and Mischa Burge who, along with staff member and proud mum Megan Bourke, took care of the timekeeping on the day. Thanks also to Assistant Sports Coordinator Evan Green who was the chief announcer on the day and  to Sports Coordinator, Mitchell Webb, for all his hard work and organisation, ensuring the day went off without a hitch.

Best of luck to Evalyn Hayward, Tom Lyons and the 16y/o Girls Relay team for the next stage, Greater Western Region, to be held on Tuesday the 14th of March!
