From the School Pyschologists

Whilst research and information about the effects of vaping continues to expand, many young people still struggle to manage the easy access to harmful substances and understand safe pathways for seeking help.

This term, the School Psychologists Bec and Amy and the School Nurse Kelli, spoke to Year 8 - 10 Boarders about vaping and how to reduce and cease use if young people are struggling with reliance on a substance, specifically nicotine, found in many unlabelled vapes. By adopting a harm minimisation approach we endeavour to enhance the health and wellbeing of students.

Topics we discussed were:

  • What young people already know
  • Brain changes
  • Body changes
  • Addiction
  • Withdrawal
  • Quit Plans
  • Support available
  • Assistance pathways

Education is important in reducing the potential harms associated with vaping. By providing accurate and up to date information about the risks and consequences, and facilitating open and non-judgemental conversations, we aim to create a space where students feel comfortable discussing their experiences and concerns.

It is important that families and schools speak the same language in regards to vaping.
