Auslan News

Welcome to Term 3 of Auslan:

Leading into Term 3, we have been doing some revision of Semester 1 topics as well as learning some new signs...

Grade Preps – Learning new signs for describing yourself: about me, my hair style is, my hair colour is, and my eyes are brown, green, or blue.

Hair, curly, wavy, straight, long, short, fringe, colour, black, red, brown and blonde.

Eyes, brown, blue, green and hazel (hazel is fingerspelled.)

Grade 1-2 and Grade 3-4 – Learning Auslan signs for Days of the Week and signs to describe the Weather.

Days of the Week are signed using a lot of fingerspelling. A fingerspelling mat is attached to this news item again in case your child/ren need to use it.

Days, week, Mon, Tues, Wed, Th, Fri, Sat and Sun.

Weather – sun/sunny, clouds, windy, rain, hail, snow, storm, lightning, thunder, temperature, hot, cold, warm, degrees.

Grade 5-6 have been learning to sign basic conversations using the Auslan language. This has required students to draw on their knowledge of Auslan signs in our previous topics, including: basic greetings, fingerspelling, feelings, fruit, and animals.

Keep an eye out around the school for some students’ Deaf Culture Posters that have been put up to help educate the school community about things that are intrinsic to the Deaf Community. The posters look amazing!!

SSV State Cross Country – Charlie F

Congratulations to Charlie F who represented the school at the State Cross Country at Yarra Valley Racing Club last Thursday. On a particularly wet and slipper course, Charlie ran superbly, finishing 55th overall in his age group. Brilliant effort, Charlie!

Sandhurst Division Netball

Well done to all of the students who represented the school at the Sandhurst Division Netball tournament yesterday. The standard of competition was very high and our teams are to be congratulated for the quality of netball they played throughout the day.

Our Grade 6 Girls team had a particularly successful day. They won 5 games, drew 1 and their only loss came against the eventual winners St Therese’s. They displayed great skill, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day and should be very proud of their efforts. I would sincerely like to thank Ms Rodda for coaching this team.

Our Grade 6 Boys team also had a great day. For many of the boys, this was their first time playing competitive netball and they learnt a lot as the day went on. They played the game in great spirit and were an absolute pleasure to coach. Well done!

Sandhurst Division Football

Good luck to both our Boys and Girls football teams who will be representing SGPS at the Sandhurst Division Football Tournament next week. The Girls will play on Tuesday and the Boys on Wednesday – both at Kennington Primary School, starting at 9.30am.
