Snowy School for Student Leadership

 Community Learning Project

Throughout term 3, ten students form the Mooroopna campus attended the Snowy School for Student Leadership. Throughout the program they learnt different styles of leadership, how to work collaboratively with others and also how to become more active members in the community.

They created a Community Learning Project (CLP) which had the goal of educating the Year 9 population about issues in our community. Throughout term 4 the group worked with the Greater Shepparton City  Council, GV CASA and The Orange Door to bring more awareness to the community about sexual assault and family violence. This project fell in line with the “16 days of Activism” which has a goal to end gender-based violence.

The campaign spanned from the 25th of November (International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women) to the 10th of December (Human Rights Day). Working with GV CASA the group was able to make and record an interview, highlighting questions that the students wanted answered. Also providing various support services to students and staff. In partnership with The Orange Door the group was able to create another video about family violence identifiers and where you can find support.

Both these videos were played during Learning Mentor sessions and helped to spread the message of the “16 Days of Activism” Campaign.  Orange is the colour that supports the “16 Days of Activism” Campaign. To show our schools support to the cause, the group organized the Year 9 collective to tie orange ribbons to the basketball fence creating a conversation starter helping to further spread the message.

A huge thank you to Mary-Ann from GSSC, Bella, Astrid and Joel from Greater Shepparton City Council, Chelsea and Christine from GV CASA and Wendy from The Orange Door for all your support and help throughout this process. You all contributed to the project making it what it was!
