Student News

Congratulations to two of our Equestrian students who competed for Victoria in the Pony Club Australia, Thoroughbred Industry Careers PCA National Championships, as part of the Victorian Tetrathlon Team. Zoe Addinsall in Year 8 and Charlie Hiscock in Year 6, both competed over two days in swimming, running, laser shooting and show jumping.  Enduring extreme weather conditions, Zoe and Charlie took hold of their College values, resilience and optimism to push through the wind, rain and hail, and gain personal bests and great results for their state, for Zoe this meant riding a show jumping course in hail! Due to COVID restrictions, each state had to compete within their border, with everything video recorded under strict judging protocols. Results are currently being tallied and we wait in anticipation.

This has been an amazing effort from both Zoe and Charlie, as well as Finley Hiscock in Year 6 (who was reserve) who trained together each week in our Equestrian Centre with College Show Jumping Coach Jamie Murray, travelled to Warrnambool each week for swimming, running and laser shooting, and participated in weekly zoom training.

On Saturday, Sacha and Chloe Laidlaw, Alison Foster and Zoe Weinberg proudly represented College at the Interschool Combined training day at MacArthur Pony Club and achieved exceptional results! Sacha placed 1st in the EV80 on Hurricane Ausome and Chloe placed 2nd on Andlyn Park Soldier Boy. Zoe competed in the EV95 and placed 2nd on Heist. Alison, riding Pippa, placed 4th in the EV60.

In other exciting news this week, senior cricket students Maddie Green and Georgia Baker-Miller are training in Melbourne as part of an extended Victorian U17 Country Girls squad and this will hopefully lead to the girls making the final state country team. School Captain, Ollie Wortley, has also made the Western Waves Youth Premier League team to participate in the state-wide series over the summer months.

Netball News

The HNA Committee has decided to cancel this week’s netball at HILCA due to the local COVID-19 outbreak.  Further information about the final round will be confirmed next week.  Any players over the age of 12 and 2 months who are not fully vaccinated will not be able to enter HILAC under their current rules.  Any queries regarding this are to be directed to the Southern Grampians Shire.

Let’s hope that we can all get back for the final round next week!

Basketball News

When basketball resumes, spectators are now allowed into HILAC again to watch basketball games but they must stay at the basketball court areas only and do not attend if you are feeling unwell.

Football News

It was fantastic to see many of our keen and aspiring young footballers take to the Coleraine Football Ground on back on Friday 5 November to play in the much anticipated and inaugural Greater South West Junior Football League Under 14 Grand Final. The game was a local derby between the two Hamilton Kangaroo teams (Blue and Orange) and both teams performed magnificently during the home and away season to make the grand final on August 21. However, only a day before their big moment our long ‘lockdown’ started, and it looked like the match wouldn’t go ahead.

Through the determination of the GWSJFL executive and participating coaches, we received the good news that the Grand Final could be played well after the ‘normal’ football season ended. So, with the green light to start training again in September the two sides trained in the hope that they would get the final game in still if restrictions allowed.

In what has been described as one of the best junior football games to watch, the two sides gave their all on the expansive Coleraine ground and the lead changed many times before the “blue” team kicked the last three goals of the game in final five minutes of the last quarter to claim the premiership.

All the College boys who played in the game should be proud of their efforts and commitment to their teams – it will be a season they will never forget! From left to right, the following students were victorious: Tom Templeton, James Heazlewood, Jude Alexander, Zane Thomas, Sam O’Sullivan, Harry McDonald and Will Satchell.

Seniors

Another weekend of quality individual performances by our junior players across all four grades of senior cricket. In A Grade, Henry Bensch 3-19, 1-18 & 35, Jock Barrie 21 & 18 and 1-8. In B Grade, Jack Austin continued his fine early season form with yet another half-century with 70no. C and D grades continue to be littered with junior players, some of which are still eligible for U12s. In C Grade, George Huf was a solid contributor with 27no. With the ball, Jude Alexander was the star with 4-41, George Austin 1-32 and Harry Austin 1-21 also taking wickets. Finally, D grade on the back of his 6 wickets last week, Tom Heazlewood took 1-19 in a tough loss but another great learning opportunity.

U16s

College Blue 8-136 vs St Andrew's 7-142

College Blue were on the end of a tight loss, with 6 players on Year 8 camp, it was a good effort to get this close. Sadly, it was a case of needing a few more runs with the bat the week earlier. Key players with the ball were Henry Bensch 2-8, Tom Hazelwood 2-27 and Jock Barrie 1-30.

U14s

Casterton 38 Vs College Gold 65

Where do I start with Casterton Vs College Gold?

Bowled out for a paltry 65, left the boys needing an exemplary bowling performance to stand any chance of not being beaten inside a day. 1-9 became 2-9 then 3-9, 4-9, 5-9, 6-10 before a partnership of 20 took Casterton to 7-30, then bowled out for 38. 20 wickets falling for only 103 runs. Harry Austin and Will Bourke led the early charge taking 4-1 and 2-11 respectively, Jude Alexander, Spurs Lynch and Hugh Stratmann all taking 1 wicket.

College Blue Vs Tarrington 9-160

Another consistent bowling and fielding performance by College Blue restricted Tarrington to 160 despite a solid start from their top order. This shows the depth and consistency across the whole bowling unit. George Clarke 2-15, Ned Hintum 2-15, Harry McDonald and Tom Hill took a wicket each and there were two runouts. The boys will look for another solid batting performance to knock off the 160 set for victory.
