Term 2
Welcome back to another term in STEM. It has been great to see so many students making a positive start to the term and even sharing some of their holiday discoveries. This term will see students undertaking fresh you new topics from a variety of Science subjects, so roll up your sleeves and get ready to jump in. Check out the topics below to see what we are up to.
Prep students will be looking at the world of Physical Science and investigating how different objects may slide or roll. They will work towards identifying the features of different objects (eg size and shape) and see how these features affect the way these objects move.
Grade 1 students will focussing on the world of living things in their term 2 unit of work titled "Mini-Beasts". They will spend time exploring our local environment and discovering mysterious mini creatures in their natural habitats.
Grade 2 students will explore the Physical Science unit of work titled "Making it move". In this topic, students will investigate how objects move by changing shape, size and position. They will identify how simple machines can move an object and work to create their own machines using the Kinex building kits.
Grade 3 students will be testing their sorting and classifying skills in our topic titled "Feathers or Fur". In this unit, students will investigate different groups of living things and find out what makes them unique. They will identify features that help when classifying animals and see what happens when these features are mixed and matched.
Grade 4 students will investigate the life cycles of living things this term and discover how survival is often dependent on natural partnerships. They will explore both, the Animal and Plant kingdoms and see how interactions between to the two may be beneficial.
Grade 5 students will take a look at the world of Chemical Science in the their unit of work titled "What's the matter?". They will investigate the properties of solids, liquids and gases and discover how these properties can be used to create their own air-powered vehicles.
Grade 6 students will shine light on the world of shadows in their unit of work titled "See the light". They will identify the properties of light and investigate how light behaves when
reflecting and refracting. Students will use this understanding in a design challenge to create their own periscopes.
