Year 5 Report
Term 2 2021
Welcome to Term 2! We are very excited to have you all back and hope you enjoyed your break! This Term we have some exciting things coming up including interschool sports (AFL, Soccer, Netball, Countries and District Cross Country) and House Olympic Day. We have already acknowledged ANZAC Day where we held a minute of silence at assembly to acknowledge the contributions of men and women who have served in our Armed Forces.
This Term in Reading, Grade 5s are learning to identify different question types and the best ways to answer these questions. Students will develop the strategies of skimming and scanning a text and searching for and using key words to help with our understanding of a text. Students will then begin to explore the differences between identifying important facts and information and how this relates directly to the main idea of a text. We will then bring together the strategies to summarise the texts we have read. The genres we have been reading in class are focused on environmental issues and what we can do as individuals and a class to make a difference in the world.
In class, 5A is reading 'Billionaire Boy', 5B is reading 'Kensuke's Kingdom' and 5C are reading 'Wonder'.
In Writing this Term, Grade 5 students are continuing to develop their narrative writing skills through weekly picture prompt sessions. Students are developing their abilities to plan their piece based around the story elements of a text before drafting, revising and editing their pieces. Alongside our narrative writing, students are undertaking persuasive writing tasks about different topics related to the world around us. Students are developing persuasive language techniques to include into their writing. We will be having robust classroom conversations about whether 'the weekend should be longer', 'assembly should be banned', 'the driving age should be younger', 'should endangered animals be protected' for example.
Mathematics this Term consists of developing mental and written addition and subtraction strategies. Students will explore each strategy in depth and make decisions about which strategy works best for them and for the problem at hand. To follow on from the addition and subtraction unit, students will apply these new strategies and skills to solving worded problems. Students will also explore the length and perimeter of different shapes and areas while using different platforms to create, measure and build different objects.
As always these concepts will be reinforced through hands on games and activities and real life situations and problems.
This term in Inquiry the Grade 5 students will be exploring the Australian Government. Students will be thinking about how the democracy in our country affects them, and why the government is relevant to them as citizens. Students will undertake a variety of tasks including creating and passing a law and hopefully a visit from a member of parliament.
The Grade 5 team,
