Year 2 Report

Welcome to Term 2

A warm welcome back to our Grade 2 students and families! We hope everyone had a wonderful break and are ready to jump straight back into learning (while having a bit of fun too!)

We'd love to welcome some new teachers to our family - Ms Paloma Legris has taken over from Mrs Oram-Parkinson in 2A, and Miss Tiana Elia has taken over from Mrs Hurley in 2C. We are so excited to have them join us in the Grade 2 Team!

Mathematics

During Term 2 our students will be focusing on developing their addition and subtraction skills. Initially we will focus on the students counting skills to help them add and subtract (counting on, counting forwards and back from any given number).  Then we will move onto the different strategies they can use to assist them such as doubles, tens facts and commutativity.

Our Math's lessons continue to aim to engage the students learning of concepts and skills through games, hands on activities and technology. There are opportunities for students to participate in whole group and partner work as well as focused small groups.

We continue to emphasize the importance of problem solving and reasoning by encouraging lots of discussions about alternative solutions and strategies used.

You can assist your child at home by giving them every opportunity to add and subtract, whether it be cars on the road, ingredients when your cooking, or even items in their game they may be playing.  You can also be asking questions such as, 'how did you work that out?' 'How do you know you're right?"

English

During term 2 in English, students will be exploring a unit titled “Let’s Use Facts”.

Students will listen to, read, view, interpret and create texts that inform. They will develop an understanding of the structure and organization of these texts. Students will be encouraged to explain and recall key facts on a chosen topic and create an informative report including written facts and illustrations and images.

Please continue to support your child's literacy skill development by reading to or with them each day or by providing them with access to audio books, songs or rhymes to further develop their language and vocabulary.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is My Place in the Community. Throughout the term the students will aim to identify the range of groups to which they, their family members and their class belong. They will learn about their history and of their family.  There will be a major focus on communities and developing the students understanding of the different groups and families that belong to their local community.  The students will need to explain why groups and communities have rules and understand how people participate in their community. We aim to help them understand their place in the community.
