Year 1 Report
Term 2 2021
Hello and welcome back to Term 2! We hope you have all had an enjoyable break and are ready for lots of fun learning planned for this term.
In Numeracy, Grade One students will consolidate their understanding of counting to 100 and beyond before moving onto Addition and Subtraction. Students will develop a range of mental strategies for addition and subtraction problems through hands on activities and games. Students will continue to practice the days of the week, months of the year and identifying the season each morning when completing the daily calendar. The concept of time will be taught explicitly during numeracy sessions where students will order the days of the week, months of the year and complete weekly timetables. They will gain an understand of the passage of time through games and role plays using interactive timers and clocks. Students will undertake data collection and create questions to gather simple data about. Students will explore directional language needed to give and follow directions to and from a place. They will play games that involve interpreting and following directions and use interactive resources, such as Bee Bots to navigate and arrive at a certain destination.
In Reading, Grade One students now complete a literacy block of learning which includes their reading and writing activities for the day. There has been a particular focus on developing student’s independent reading and increasing their reading stamina each day. Every Monday morning, students choose 5 ‘Just Right’ books to put into their blue folder to read during class time for the week. During soft start, students have now started to choose their own home reading book from their blue folder to take home each night.
During reading sessions students have been reading and writing memoir texts where they read and talk about personal memories. They are engaging in purposeful reading activities linked to each story book for the day such as sentence sequencing, identifying high frequency words in texts, drawing and writing a summary of their chosen story and completing sound investigations. Students are developing further phonetic awareness through Read, Write, Inc sessions and are working on decoding strategies such as pointing to each word, sounding out and looking at the pictures as they read their ‘Just Right’ books.
In writing, Grade One students will be focusing on writing recounts of a personal memory paying particular attention to words that show time passing and the use of tenses. They will be working on discussing their thoughts and feelings and including this in their writing. Students will be participating in a range of Word Study activities such as; handwriting, sound investigations, letter crafts and language experiences. Each of these activities will focus on a different letter sound each week and they will aim to improve the students’ understanding of each letter.
One of the language experiences that students have so far engaged in is blowing bubbles! The letter b and double b for 'bubbles' was the focus throughout the week.
In Inquiry, Grade One students are learning about the topic, ‘I am Australian’ with a focus on ‘Local Identity.’ Students have began this unit by looking at local communities they belong to which have included their Family, School, Classroom and Social. Students have completed a lotus diagram which included drawings and sentences explaining the community groups they belong to. There will be a particular focus on ‘Family’ where students will complete a family tree, as well as identify places that are special to them and their families. Students will also focus on sustainability and the responsibilities they may have when looking after their local community. One of the ways they will do this is by keeping a rubbish audit, which they can present at the school assembly. Upon completion of this Inquiry unit, students will have fun designing their own community using ‘Minecraft.’
